Position Overview

Reporting directly to the senior vice president and chief communications officer, the vice president will be based in Washington, D.C. and oversee Pew's programmatic communications for its global research and advocacy initiatives.
The vice president will be responsible for the creation, management, and implementation of communications across the programmatic portfolio, including Pew's environment, government performance, and health initiatives. The vice president will focus on strategic planning for all external communications efforts, collaboration with senior program leaders across the organization and with external partners, as necessary, and the development and execution of effective plans, messages, and tactics.
The vice president will also work in partnership with senior management, including senior leaders in the communications department, to bring creativity, knowledge, and insights to bear to guide efforts to increase the impact of Pew's research findings and advocacy campaigns. This position manages a staff of approximately 50 communications professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a strategic counselor to senior leadership for programmatic communications spanning a variety of projects and topic areas, bringing expertise on communicating to policymakers and other key audiences to bear, instilling creativity and collaboration, and ensuring effective methods and tactics.
  • Work with program and communications staff to help develop strategic communications plans, including developing specific goals and metrics, messages, and tactics. Regularly assess outcomes, share best practices, and foster culture of excellence and growth.
  • Manage communications teams with responsibility for supporting Pew's programmatic initiatives. Additionally, help recruit and mentor staff, offer opportunities for skill development and growth, and provide regular feedback about progress toward individual goals.
  • Collaborate effectively across the communications department to ensure strategies and tactics utilize creative and compelling earned media, digital, and multimedia strategies to have an impact with key audiences.
  • Support the creation, development, and implementation of effective earned media and digital strategies and campaigns that contribute to achieving Pew's goals. As needed, directly engage members of the media to build and maintain relationships, share information about Pew's projects, and secure coverage. Additionally, help prepare for and manage crisis communications, as required.
  • Directly engage with senior leaders across the organization to advance Pew's mission, communicate internally, drive organizational objectives, and foster diversity, inclusion and equity.
  • Participate as a key member of the Communications management team. Prepare reports and presentations for the senior vice president and chief communications officer, and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Serve as a member of the key planning team for crisis communications preparation and execution for Pew and divisions' projects and campaigns as needed.
  • Contributes to Communications' institutional reporting to the Executive Office and the Board of Directors and serves as the key liaison to the Pew
  • Research Center's communications team.



Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience required.
  • At least 15 years of increasingly responsible communications management experience in the for-profit or non-profit sector, including experience in issues management and public policy communications. Experience developing communications campaigns to support public policy and/or research or advocacy organizations is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of previous direct supervisory experience required including experience managing performance management process for direct reports and providing career development advice and counsel.
  • Prior to commencing employment with Pew, candidates for this position who were registered to lobby in any jurisdiction must certify termination of previous registration(s) and provide copies of termination notices with said jurisdiction(s) to Pew.
  • Proven experience managing media relations for an organization, including preparing spokespeople, crafting messages, engaging directly with reporters, and/or serving as a spokesperson.
  • Demonstrated record of success working collaboratively with customers, clients, and senior leaders in a high-pressure environment.
  • Must be conversant on the latest digital trends with the understanding of how they could apply to Pew's strategic goals.
  • Ability to think strategically, juggle multiple priorities, manage time effectively, and identify resources for projects.
  • A well organized, task-oriented style, with a focus on collaboratively achieving clear and ambitious goals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; able to develop and manage productive relationships with campaign managers, consultants, and others involved in developing or implementing the communication efforts at Pew.
  • Excellent listening skills. Exhibit skills of diplomacy. Able to work productively with a wide array of different people throughout the institution.
  • Excellent oral and writing skills to effectively communicate within and outside the organization.
  • Demonstrated advocacy communication and strategic communication planning skills.
  • Must be experienced at working with senior-level executives to provide counsel, guidance and direction on communications initiatives and programs.
  • Must be flexible, creative, and assume high accountability for all areas of responsibility. Must demonstrate strong collaborative spirit and leadership ability.
  • Excellent oral and writing skills to effectively communicate within and outside the organization.
  • Seasoned judgment, able to make decisions, justify recommendations, and be responsive, clear and firm with colleagues.

Communications
The Communications department supports leaders at all levels of the institution to promote project and campaign efforts, inform key audiences, and protect and advance Pew's reputation. The department provides a comprehensive range of communications services for all programmatic and administrative units and Trusts-operated projects. Our in-house expertise includes: strategy and message development; editorial support; design and creative services; media event planning; digital and video production; and social media. The unit oversees all communications policies, guidelines, and processes in order to ensure production of the highest quality work and effectively steward Pew's resources.
