WRAL is seeking a thoughtful, thorough and versatile reporter for its state government team. This individual will be able to conceive and execute contextual stories that delve into the hows and whys of developments in the North Carolina General Assembly.

The primary responsibility of this reporter will be to daily write articles on the biggest news in state government for the NC Capitol section of WRAL.com. They must also be capable of crafting nuanced stories, relying on a deep source network. The candidate would also be expected to appear in TV Q&As and on WRAL podcasts to discuss state government topics.

Top candidates will have direct experience covering the Tar Heel State's legislature for a newspaper, wire service or broadcast outlet. We would also strongly consider candidates with experience covering government and politics in other states. Familiarity covering federal, state or local courts would also be a plus.

The following characteristics and qualifications are essential: unquenchable curiosity and a strong sense of fairness; outstanding contacts in North Carolina's state government or an ability to source up quickly and continually develop new contacts; refined interviewing skills; superb storytelling abilities; a good feel for visuals; and the capability to deliver clean copy following AP style. Experience filing public records requests and reviewing databases is also preferred.

Broadcast experience isn't required, but we'd like someone who is willing to learn. Preference will also be given to candidates with three years of previous experience reporting in local news and a four-year college degree.
