How This Role Contributes to Brighthouse Financial:

The Sr. Sustainability Associate will be a part of a newly created team and will report to our Chief Sustainability Officer. This team will be focused on disclosing our company's standings as it relates to ESG while understanding and measuring materiality and internal and industry benchmarks. This will include assessing relatable industry and company-specific data and disclosing Brighthouse Financial's ongoing ESG and sustainability efforts. Candidate will work closely with internal business partners to gather data related to ESG topics and create relevant reports on critical information to be shared with internal and external stakeholders.

Work Location:

To protect the health and safety of our employees, our offices are closed until at least September 2021. When our offices reopen, the individual hired for this role will be based in our Charlotte, NC, Morristown, NJ, Boston, MA or New York, NY offices.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Project manager for ESG data collection and disclosure efforts
    • Collecting and synthesizing material data from individual business units
    • Drafting ESG disclosure content, reports, and communications to internal and external stakeholders and work directly with Marketing and IT partners on web-based disclosure efforts
    • Liaising with business units to ensure consistency with company-wide sustainability strategy
    • Key internal stakeholder in charge of ESG survey responses
  • Ongoing analysis of BHF ESG efforts to enhance strategic approach to sustainability
    • Maintain ongoing materiality mapping and benchmarking efforts including analysis of BHF ESG disclosures compared to peers, industry, and general market
    • Benchmark BHF disclosures in context of ESG reporting frameworks, including SASB and TCFD
    • Monitor public statements from capital markets community related to ESG trends and provide regular updates to relevant internal stakeholders
    • Monitor regulatory and legislative developments related to ESG and coordinate strategic internal approach
    • Gap analyses of company ESG disclosures compared to industry and general market, as well as in comparison to existing ESG reporting frameworks
  • Leverage intelligence gained through market analysis and stakeholder feedback to inform BHF sustainability strategy with a focus on disclosure and risks and opportunities stemming from ESG categories
  • Assist in ensuring cross-functional approach to sustainability through direct engagement in specific projects such as enhancement of internal supplier diversity program

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills with a focus on the ability to tell the BHF sustainability story in a succinct but comprehensive manner
  • Familiarity with existing ESG disclosure frameworks, including SASB and TCFD, and experience crafting disclosure content consistent with those frameworks
  • Experience in drafting or analyzing capital markets-focused ESG disclosures
  • 7+ years of relevant experience with prior project management experience preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline or equivalent experience preferred
  • Knowledge of regulatory and legislative developments related to ESG
  • Collaboration across various functions at the company including Procurement, HR, Legal, Communications, etc.
  • Flexibility and ability to handle multiple priorities and projects
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong research and trend analysis skills
  • Ability to work independently while considering input from multiple stakeholders to make formal recommendations
  • No formal supervisory responsibilities, but may guide the activities of lower level staff members
