Specialist, Safety - District Office

Essential Job Functions:
  • Conducts inspections of campus laboratories and facilities, evaluating work areas and practices for proper safety control and makes recommendations to develop work practices that reduce the potential for accidents.
  • Develops and implements safety programs and policies in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Assists with response to public health emergencies including, but not limited to, contact tracing, policy and procedure development, and preparedness activities.
  • Conducts ergonomic workplace evaluations and consultations with employees determining ways to reduce potential repetitive injuries.
  • Develops and provides safety training programs for faculty and staff, including hazard communication, general safety, materials handling; create customized training for unique hazardous operations.
  • Assists with coordination of the hazardous waste/materials management program.
  • Evaluates and updates safety manuals and documents to ensure conformance with SOPs or other written policies and guidelines.
  • Responds to, investigates and documents incidents and emergencies using the incident management software.
  • Analyzes accident and incident reports for trends; make recommendations for correcting unsafe conditions and actions.
  • Maintains and oversees first aid stations and AEDs across college.
  • Maintains working knowledge of federal, state and local occupational and safety regulations.

Additional Job Functions:
  • Manages MSDSonline system: provides SDS documents to all campuses and departments that need access.
  • Manages online incident reporting software.
  • Collects and maintains workplace chemical lists.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to demonstrate the College values
  • Working knowledge of building and fire safety codes, worker safety issues and other standards related to life safety practices in an educational environment
  • Must be able to work safely in an environment containing hazardous chemicals using personal protective equipment/safety measures
  • Ability to organize, plan and develop appropriate procedure to establish compliance objectives
  • Experience training groups of varying sizes
  • Computer proficient in various software packages, including Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access and Publisher
  • Excellent oral and written skills
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to work with minimum supervision
  • Ability to travel to various site locations

Required Education:
  • Associate degree in a related field or 60 credit hours of education

Preferred Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational/ Environmental Health and Safety, or Related Science

Required Experience:
  • One year of related experience

Preferred Experience:
  • Three years of experience in safety, industrial hygiene, emergency management, or related field

Required Licenses/Certifications:
  • Possession of a valid Class C Driver License (Texas Driver License within six months of employment)

Preferred Licenses/Certifications:
  • ICS 100/200/300/400/700/800
  • OSHA 10/30 General Industry or Construction
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

Salary Grade: 19
