Job Summary

The Salem Public Library is seeking a service-oriented individual who is interested in working in an enthusiastic and highly collaborative environment. The successful candidate for this Senior Library Assistant position will have excellent interpersonal communication skills, an eye for details, ability to work with a diverse user group both internally and externally, and have a proven track-record of exceptional customer service. This position has primary responsibility for serials management and copy cataloging library materials. Other responsibilities include assisting with directing and evaluating efficacy of workflows within an assigned Technical Services area, connecting library customers with library products, services, materials and events through direct customer service, and participating in the Library's Person-In-Charge (PIC) safety program, and Library and CCRLS committees.

The Salem Public Library is part of the Chemeketa Cooperative Regional Library Service (CCRLS).

If you are someone who has the following, then this may be the perfect opportunity for you!
  • Experience copy cataloging and classifying materials.
  • Demonstrated functional knowledge of current cataloging practices such as such as RDA, MARC, AACR2, LCSH, and DDC and an understanding of the principles of authority control.
  • Experience working in the acquisitions, serials and cataloging modules of an Integrated Library System.
  • Experience using OCLC Connexion.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Effective problem solving, decision-making, and adaptability to manage competing demands.
  • Ability to respect, seek to understand, and value individual differences to foster and support a diverse and inclusive team-oriented workplace.
  • Knowledge of modern office or library environments, practices, tools, techniques, principles and technologies, including emerging technologies.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule including weekdays, evenings, and weekends.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check and drug test (including marijuana).
  • Must have an Oregon Driver license and meet the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • Associate degree and one year of work experience in library services, customer service, office work or other related area with some lead experience, or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential job functions.
  • Bilingual skills preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.
