DESCRIPTION:

 

Oversees the day to day activities of designated crews performing a variety of routine to skilled maintenance, construction, inspection and repair duties on the District's ties, rails, rail beds, signage, and related light rail track system; oversees the performance of and participates in physical labor to accomplish assigned duties; inspects rails and track system for defects, wear, and other unsafe conditions; safely operates a variety of District vehicles and equipment practices safe work processes and contributes to the creation and maintenance of a safe working environment for self and others; and performs other related duties as assigned.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

 

Plans, organizes, assigns and directs the work of Rail Maintenance personnel and assists Rail Maintenance Workers in the performance of assigned duties that includes the removal and replacement of rails and ties, track fastenings and turnout fittings; repairs, adjusts, cleans and lubricates switches, frogs, road crossings and appliances, signs and drainage structures; surfaces and lines track; cuts, drills, grinds and welds rail and track components; within scope of responsibility, as defined by supervision, independently directs and accomplishes day-to-day routine activities and/or specific assignments; serves as field supervisor or acting supervisor, making decisions and assignments and maintaining direct communication with District Operations during absences of supervisor; provides limited evaluation input on staff skill levels and competencies, directly reporting to supervisor for formal performance evaluation and review of staff; and performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

 

Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible full time work experience successfully repairing and maintaining railroad track and railroad track systems which includes at least one year of experience working as a crew leader and two years as a Rail Maintenance Worker.

 

Special Requirements, Licenses and/or Certificates: Possession of a Class A California Driver's License permit with endorsement(s) on the first day of appointment, and the ability to obtain a Class A California Driver's License with endorsement(s) within 90 days of appointment; a satisfactory driving record; possession of a Forklift Operator Certification or the ability to obtain a forklift certificate within 90 days of appointment; ability to maintain Regional Transit's Operator's License; possession of, or ability to obtain Regional Transit's Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Certification, High Rail Operator's License; pass the Ishihara Eye Test; required to obtain the tools for the Senior Rail Maintenance Worker by the end of the probationary period.
