Information Technology (IT) at Pew takes a proactive approach toward the use of technology to increase the organization's capacity for high-quality strategic philanthropy. The department comprises highly competent, forward-thinking professionals who are responsible for the technology needs of all Pew staff, as well as for Pew's subsidiaries in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. IT is organized into distinct areas of responsibility, including strategic alignment of technology with the business, the evaluation and acquisition of software and hardware, implementation new systems and data repositories, and providing support for the extended network, desktop computer hardware, and software applications.

Position Overview

The Senior Manager, Infrastructure Engineering supervises a team of highly skilled engineers & systems administrators and reports to the Director, Infrastructure Operations and Security. The Senior Manager is responsible for the design, and operation of Pew's technology infrastructure, both cloud and on-premises, which includes servers, storage, network and associated infrastructure systems. This is both a strategic and hands-on technical role, working with other senior members of the Information Technology.


  • The operation of Pew's 24x7 infrastructure services, both cloud-based and on-premises.
  • Serve as one of the highest levels of escalation for system and security issues.
  • Effective management and mentoring of team members including delegation of work, assessment of performance and development of staff resources.
  • Lead the ongoing transformation of IT infrastructure from traditional, on-prem hosting to cloud-based and "as-a-service" models.
  • Challenge existing organization and processes: what should we do differently? Where should we adapt to meet emerging technologies and industry trends? How should we structure our team to best serve our customers?
  • Work across teams to define group priorities and coordinate activities to align with IT leadership's goals and initiatives.
  • Track and document the progress of complex projects across multiple teams, providing timely reporting to IT management.
  • Identify communication gaps, manage issue escalations and provide support to teams balancing competing priorities
  • Track and optimize cloud infrastructure and licensing costs on an ongoing basis
  • Manage relationships with key vendors and service providers to ensure that service levels are being met within budget.
  • Management of multiple large-scale projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Quickly turn business problems into technical solutions.
  • Administration, testing and enhancement of Pew's technology disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
  • Recommending technical solutions that will enhance performance, increase redundancy, and add flexibility to the existing infrastructure.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience with a minimum of three years direct supervisory experience including performance management.
  • Demonstrated experience transforming IT infrastructure and moving an organization toward a mature cloud-first service delivery model.
  • Proven experience managing IT infrastructure teams and personnel in a complex, customer-facing environment.
  • Prior experience managing some combination of IP-based networking, WAN technologies, virtual server technologies, cloud infrastructure, diverse user endpoints, MS Office 365, or SAN/NAS storage.
  • Experience managing third party vendors and service providers, identifying appropriate SLAs and performance metrics, and ensuring that delivered services meet expectation.
  • Skilled at documenting designs and policies associated with system and networking infrastructure.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills: must be able to develop and propose solutions in a clear, concise, well-organized manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working productively as a member of a team, both in leadership and non-leadership roles.
  • Experience coordinating multiple tasks simultaneously while achieving results under pressure.
  • Manages time effectively according to priorities.


Occasional travel required between Pew's Philadelphia and Washington, DC offices. Minimal additional travel required to attend trainings, seminars or conferences.
