We seek an experienced scientific manager with a background in chemistry, materials science, polymer chemistry, or a related field to apply their skills to develop synergistic polymeric and liquid electrolyte materials enabling the next generation of high-energy density lithium metal batteries. You will report to the Director of R&D, Materials in this role.  As an integral member of Sepion’s core R&D team, you will manage a multidisciplinary team of researchers, including chemists, chemical engineers, and materials scientists, to guide the design, incorporation, and optimization of polymer materials in lithium metal batteries with liquid electrolytes. Prior experience managing a team of scientists in a research environment is required to be successful in this role. Additional experience in polymeric materials design and expert ability to derive structure-property relationships between materials design and battery performance is preferred. In this role, you will be tasked with taking ownership of and guiding further co-optimizing electrolyte and polymer interlayers, including design, fabrication, characterization, and incorporation strategies at the R&D level. Your impact on developing functional electrolyte and polymer interlayer materials to be incorporated into Sepion’s lithium metal batteries will be critical to accelerating the commercialization timeline of next-gen electric-vehicle batteries.   • Lead a team of scientists and engineers in the design and incorporation of electrolyte and polymer materials for high energy density lithium metal batteries optimized for long-range, low-cost EV performance; ongoing activities include molecular design, synthesis, purification, and characterization of molecular and polymeric materials, and experimental design to parse chemical, electrochemical, and thermo-mechanical performance of materials in battery cells.
  • Collaborate with Director of R&D, Materials to ensure business priorities are effectively translated into impactful R&D goals; communicate priorities to Staff; and guide the design of experimental work plans that ensure on-time execution of deliverables.
  • Motivate and inspire direct reports to deliver impactful results through thoughtful strategic and professional goal setting, intentional collaboration, attentive support for professional development, and regular delivery of compassionate feedback
  • Take initiative to ensure R&D projects include a balance of innovation-focused exploratory experimentation with performance-focused data-driven exploitative experimentation, enabling a deep understanding of polymer interlayer-liquid electrolyte interactions, including polymer-electrolyte compatibility, polymer solubility in emerging electrolytes, mechanical properties in the dry and swollen state, polymer wettability, polymer and electrolyte electrochemical stability, and polymer and electrolyte performance in battery cells
  • Collaborate with the computational modeling and cell engineering teams to predict and evaluate new materials’ properties before and after cell cycling, identify key performance indicators for electrolyte and anode-interfacing polymer films, and use these insights to establish structure-property relationships that guide further materials optimization.
  • Lead the evaluation and development of polymer coated battery separator materials to improve lithium metal battery performance and safety.
  • Stay ahead of the polymer interlayer, solid and gel-polymer electrolyte, and liquid electrolyte scientific and patent literature in the context of lithium batteries and disseminate critical information company-wide.
  • Invent defensible intellectual property and support patent application writing.
