Job DescriptionAmherst College invites applications for the Reserves Supervisor position. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Reserves Supervisor is responsible for course reserve services in print and electronic formats across all disciplines. As a working supervisor, processes course reserves in electronic and print format each semester. Collaborates with Interlibrary Loan staff who supervise scanning by student assistants. Participates fully as a member of the Access Services department and serves regularly scheduled hours at the front desk. Supervises1 full-time employee. Maintains a Tuesday-Saturday 9:30am-5:30pm work schedule.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises Reserves Associate and oversees the reserve work of the Science Library Specialist and Music Library Specialist.
  • Actively works towards an intentionally inclusive culture for all staff, students, and faculty.
  • Maintains workflow and procedure documentation for print and electronic reserves processes.
  • Trains and provides support to Academic Department Coordinators in using eReserve software to track copyright compliance.
  • Stays current with trends in course reserve services and software.
  • Serves as Student Supervisor On Duty in the absence of the Access Services Supervisor, particularly on Friday and Saturday.
  • Assists in training student assistants, ensuring that they understand and carry out library policies and procedures.
Processes print and electronic reserves
  • Solicits syllabi/reading lists from faculty and Academic Department Coordinators.
  • Checks assigned journal articles and book chapters for availability from Library's databases and on the web.
  • Collects materials and delegates digitization, assuring quality of electronic copies.
  • Enters bibliographic citations, stable links, and PDF files into eReserve database for each course requested.
  • Creates print reserve collection, maintaining accurate course and material listings in library database.
  • Communicates with faculty and Academic Department Coordinators for clarification, copyright, and other issues.

Scheduled hours at the Frost Front Desk
  • Provides services and assistance to library users, including charging/discharging materials, maintaining borrower accounts, explaining policies and procedures, maintaining an inclusive and respectful culture, answering questions, and referring patrons to other departments within the library or on campus as appropriate.
  • Answers telephone and directs calls as necessary.
  • Maintains working knowledge of library policies and procedures. Engages in departmental discussions about best practices and policy changes.
  • Provides backup and answers questions for student desk attendants.

Supports other library departmental initiatives
  • Outside of peak reserve processing season, provides support to other library departmental projects.

Performs other duties/functions as requested
  • Attends regular department, library, division, and collegewide meetings.
  • Compiles statistics on print and electronic reserves.
  • Shares monitoring of and responding to messages in the library reserves email accounts.

  • Associate's degree, or 3-5 years of experience in lieu of degree
  • Experience in an academic or research library setting.
  • Experience searching online bibliographic databases
  • Demonstrated exceptional customer service, including creative problem-solving and a commitment to equitable access
  • Demonstrated close attention to detail
  • Proficiency with MS Office and/or Google Suite and ability to learn new technologies and incorporate them into existing operations
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Ability to work closely and problem-solve with colleagues from all library departments and with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to effectively supporting a broadly diverse and intentionally inclusive community

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience using Zotero or other bibliographic management software
  • Work experience in an academic or research library.
  • Supervisory experience
