Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Research Technician position. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Research Technician will assist Professor Durr in the day-to-day operation of the laboratory including the maintenance of equipment, ordering supplies, and safety oversight. In addition, the technician will assist in training a diverse group of undergraduate students in laboratory techniques and appropriate record keeping. Outside of these duties, the technician will conduct research on organometallic initiators for the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters.

This is a full-time, gift-funded (Dow, REF 105071), one-year term position, with the possibility of renewal for a second year.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Day to Day Lab functions
  • Assist with maintaining lab equipment
  • Maintain laboratory inventory and assist in ordering supplies
  • Assist with oversight of lab safety

Train undergraduate students
  • Model and teach laboratory techniques
  • Teach and monitor appropriate record-keeping

Conduct Research on organometallic initiators for the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters. Write reports. Analyze and prepare data for publication.

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry
  • Demonstrated interest in carrying out independent research
  • Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively, and the desire to train and support undergraduate students new to research
  • Experience with one or more of the following: air and moisture free synthesis, polymer synthesis and characterization (NMR, GPC, and DSC), and organic synthesis.
