Position Purpose

To be primarily responsible for the Research Safety Program in collaboration with other EHS officers. To conduct regular inspections of research laboratories and allied areas to ensure compliance with federal and state regulatory requirements including student and employee health and safety as required by OSHA's Laboratory Standard. To assist in ensuring the proper management of hazardous materials/waste in teaching and research laboratories as part of the inspection process. To assist in research safety training and fostering a positive, proactive lab safety culture.



Skills & Knowledge
  • Demonstrated understanding of research science, occupational & environmental health & safety.
  • Well organized and ability to follow directions with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to develop and deliver training on laboratory safety.
  • Good judgment and poise in potentially stressful situations.
  • Ability to be certified in emergency response with hazardous materials.
  • Ability to wear a self contained breathing apparatus and lift 50lbs.
  • An annual physical examination is required.
  • Ability to respond to campus emergencies after hours and on weekends as needed.
  • Strong commitment to a diverse working environment and to serving the needs of a large and diverse community.


Minimum Experience
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct audits or quality assurance tasks, write concise summaries and follow-up on deficiencies.


Minimum Education
  • Bachelors' degree or higher in a life science or engineering.
  • Professional certifications in EHS fields or disciplines.

Key Accountabilities
Key Accountabilities

Research Safety
• Leads the EHS oversight and management of Research Safety in collaboration with specific EHS programs in Biosafety, Chemical Safety, Radiation Safety, and Hazardous Waste Management.
• Develops, implements and supervises a schedule of regular safety inspections of Dartmouth laboratories and facilities to insure adherence to proper work practices and safe storage of hazardous materials, including chemicals, biohazards, radioisotopes, and lasers.
• Works closely with the Senior Associate Director, Associate Director, Biological Safety Officer, and Radiation Safety Officer to support the entire laboratory safety program of the institution.
• Serves as a technical resource on chemical safety/compliance issues in support of the College
• Maintains management and oversight of hazardous material/dangerous goods shipping and receiving
Hazardous Materials Response
• In coordination with the College's Emergency Manager, develops and maintains the College's emergency response capability for chemical or biohazardous spills, including equipment and supplies.
• Develops and coordinates lab safety training activities.
• In coordination with EHS technical staff, responds to hazardous materials incidents.
• As a member of an EHS team, performs clean-up tasks that may require use of self-contained breathing apparatus, respirators, and fully encapsulated protective clothing.

Radiation/Laser Safety
• Assists the Radiation Safety Officer in the management and oversight of the College's Radiation and Laser Safety Programs.
• Exercises management and oversight of Radiation Safety Program for compliance with College, NRC and NH State regulations as they apply to current College licenses.
Biological Safety
• Assists the Biological Safety Officer in the management and oversight of the College's Biological Safety Program.
• Exercises management and oversight of laboratories using biological materials, ensuring compliance with the College's Exposure Control/BSL2 program, applicable NH State and governmental regulations.
Chemical Safety
• Assists the Chemical Hygiene Officer in the management and oversight of the College's Chemical Safety Program.
• Exercises management and oversight of laboratories using hazardous chemicals, ensuring compliance with the College's Chemical Hygiene Plan, applicable NH State and governmental regulations.
Hazardous Waste Management
• Assists the Hazardous Waste Manager in the management and oversight of the College's Hazardous Waste Program.
• Assists in the EHS oversight and management of the waste management program to ensure compliance with College, NH State and federal regulations in laboratories and waste accumulation areas.
• In cooperation with other EHS staff, works to achieve waste minimization goals.
