Position Purpose

The Research Assistant (RA) will play a key role in a research project examining the use of smartphones and wearable sensors in monitoring depressive symptoms. More specifically, the RA will be responsible for assisting with preparation of IRB materials and study protocols, drafting progress reports to the study investigation team, participant recruitment, data collection and completion of participant follow-up assessments. A research assistant will be responsible for reviewing screening data from an online survey platform to determine who screens positive for major depressive disorder, and the research assistant will also be responsible for contacting those persons regarding their possible participation in the study. The research assistant will then be responsible for scheduling participants' diagnostic interviews with the postdoctoral fellow following the screen. The research assistant will also be responsible for most of the primary routine contact with participants, including contacting participants if they are showing signs of non-compliance with study procedures (after being advised of this by the graduate research assistant), as well as conducting participant check-ins and debriefs. The research assistant will also be responsible for managing a phone messaging system and answering questions from participants. The research assistant will be responsible for mailing the wearable devices to participants. The research assistant will perform financial analysis and prepare management reports and projections for ongoing project activities. In addition, the research assistant will communicate with investigators regarding fiscal matters. The research assistant will be responsible for communicating with the graduate research assistant to determine the reimbursement rate based on participant compliance. If participants report that there are problems with app or wearable devices, the research assistant will coordinate with a graduate research assistant and study PI and co-Is.

Key Accountabilities

Research Responsibilities (75%)

  • Participant Recruitment: Works with the Research Coordinator/Postdoctoral Fellow to recruit and screen patients for study eligibility, completing necessary questionnaires, assessments and paperwork.
  • Participant Consent: Thoroughly explains the study, reviews all study materials with participants, and obtains informed verbal consent.
  • Research Visits: Conducts web based research interviews and web health coaching sessions. Assists with scheduling, coordinating with other study team members, and documentation of study visits.
  • Participant Tracking: Tracks participant flow through the study and updates tracking logs in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Reporting and Communication: Provides updates on study recruitment, safety events, data queries, and study supplies to the Project Director.
  • Study Management: Communicates with the Research Coordinator and Principal Investigator (PI) regarding study operations, achievement of study goals, participant recruitment targets, and follow-up retention rates.
  • Data Collection and Integrity: Reviews entered data and obtains missing information. Documents all data accurately and according to protocol.
  • Documentation: Maintains study files in accordance with federal regulations. Ensures that participant and data confidentiality and integrity are maintained.
    Assures that Federal guidelines and requirements are met, and all work is completed in accordance with human subject research Good Clinical Practice.
  • Problem Resolution: Identifies, responds to, and participates in the resolution of potential and actual problems in study operations and participant activities.
  • Protocol Compliance: Ensures that study activities are carried out in accordance with protocol, including but not limited to participant recruitment and screening, and participant research visits.

Communication/Presentation (20%)

  • Establishes and maintains positive relationships with participants.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to foster inclusiveness and diversity though interactions and communications with others.
  • Effectively communicates study protocol and research goals to CTBH affiliates and other partners.
  • Contributes to and works well with the CTBH team.
  • Properly represents CTBH and Dartmouth College in all aspects of employment and associated duties.

Miscellaneous (5%)

  • Participates in on-going trainings and keep abreast of developments in the field.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
