Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Research Assistant (Biology) position. The Research Assistant (Biology) is a full-time, one-year term position, starting at $19.55/hour- commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Research Assistant investigates molecular mechanisms underlying cell migration in the amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum in the Edwards Lab at Amherst College. We have exciting projects underway focused on understanding the role of phosphoinositide kinases in directed cell migration and collective migration in multicellular slugs. The research project(s) will involve molecular genetics, biochemistry, and cell biology techniques, and microscopy. Amherst College will open a new state-of-the-art molecular imaging facility in August 2022, complete with super-resolution and live-cell imaging capabilities, making it an exciting time to be joining us. The research assistant is expected to contribute to all aspects of the lab's research activities, including training and mentoring a diverse group of undergraduate students and contributing to an inclusive and welcoming environment for all. The Research Assistant will also assist with lab management on a regular basis. This is an excellent opportunity to work with a group of dynamic young scientists and ideal for recent graduates and everyone seeking to bolster their research credentials.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and carry out experiments, including data collection and analysis under the supervision of PI Edwards
  • The research assistant will have the opportunity to contribute research for publication and presentation at research conferences.

Training undergraduate students with basic laboratory techniques
  • Working with PI Edwards and undergraduate students in the Edwards Lab
  • Training a diverse set of undergraduate students with basic laboratory techniques
  • Working to ensure a respectful, inclusive environment

Lab management and other duties as requested
  • Preparation and inventory management of cell culture reagents
  • Maintenance, storage, and inventory of lab chemical reagents
  • Maintenance, storage, and inventory of lab consumables


  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Knowledge of molecular biology concepts
  • Experience with routine molecular biology techniques such as PCR and DNA preparation
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Commitment to working with a diverse community

  • Experience with confocal microscopy and or molecular biology techniques such as DNA preparation, PCR and ligation;
  • and biochemical techniques such as protein purification, immunodetection, and cell staining
