At Vetsource, we help pet owners gain easy access to the medications that their pets need to stay happy and healthy. We are seeking a dynamic problem solver with a background in purchasing to help us evolve our purchasing program to improve product availability and resiliency as we grow. This will require an assessment of our current practices and the overlay of your expertise and experiences to build successful collaborative relationships with vendors. On a daily basis your responsibilities would include oversight of a team of buyers, maintaining positive relationships with suppliers and coordinating with other internal teams regarding their routine supply needs.

To be successful as a Purchasing Manager you should be able to manage and optimize purchasing activities and processes; ensure purchasing activities support quality, cost, inventory and service level standards. You will continually evaluate and adjust purchasing, materials management strategies, and plans to meet changing economic and competitive conditions. You will be responsible for the development and management of purchasing and inventory practices and tools.

Essential Duties:

  • Develop and maintain a distribution network between organizational locations
  • Oversee purchasing of goods and services, ensuring cost and quality standards are met
  • Establish policies and procedures for identifying, evaluating, selecting and negotiating with vendors
  • Manage vendor relationships or work with vendors to resolve quality, shipping, or invoicing issues
  • Maintain accurate and timely records and inventory counts to ensure that distribution activities meet the corporate strategic needs
  • Assess departmental performance, identify weaknesses or risk, and suggest operational changes to ensure the efficient flow of goods
  • Develop and execute purchasing and materials management strategies, plans, policies, procedures, programs and systems, to ensure achievement of short and long term company objectives and maximize support of business operations.
  • Ensures that materials and services are purchased in an efficient, timely and cost-effective manner without disruption to operations, by implementing consistent process disciplines which leverage all available technology and talent.
  • Directs the purchasing cycle of materials, capital equipment, and related services on a local and national level
  • Administers cost reduction methods via increased supplier base, development of source directives, and centralized Vetsource purchasing.
  • Develop plans and procedures to carry out purchasing, inventory and materials management functions in accordance with Vetsource policies and uniform commercial practices.
  • Develop trends and forecasts to optimize purchasing decisions.
  • Ensure inventory management practices are consistent with all accounting standards. Tailor inventory purchasing to support inventory needs and achieve maximum financial and operational performance.
  • Implement methods of operation that best ensure compliance with procedures, and maximize control over expenditure authorities, order fulfillment, receiving, delivery and payment.
  • Train, develop and evaluate staff. Utilizes human resources in a positive manner to ensure stability and continuity, while ensuring maximum productivity and accuracy.
  • Perform all duties with the highest standard of business ethics and professional practices.
  • Work with management to develop and implement new procedures to streamline processes and identify inventory discrepancies
  • Develop and maintain department metrics to align with company objective
  • Provide budgetary inputs based on executed results and projected initiatives
  • Support supplier relationships through inventory planning, documentation, and execution
  • Develop long-term company wide demand planning, ordering, and purchasing strategies
  • Other special projects as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Leads programs to enhance the development and engagement of management staff and direct associates.
  • Oversight of all team personnel activities regarding hiring, conducting coaching conversations, review of performance and goal setting for next trimester and payroll approval
  • Discipline, training and staff development
  • Meets regularly with staff
  • Provide staff with feedback regarding performance metrics to include corrective action if necessary
  • Responsible for coaching, mentoring, motivating, and retaining staff

Education/Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive purchasing experience, preferably in pharmaceutical or veterinary materials distribution environment or industry
  • Minimum three (3) years in a leadership or managerial capacity
  • Bachelor's Degree in Operations, Finance, Business or comparable discipline; or equivalent related work experience
  • Excellent computer skills are required; experience using email, instant message, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, ERP systems, as well as the ability to learn how to navigate unfamiliar systems or programs quickly

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Veterinary experience a plus

Special Working Conditions:

  • Ability to stand and work at a counter/computer for long periods of time
  • The noise level in the work area is normally quiet to moderate
  • Ability to tolerate an environment where dogs could be present in the office areas of the business
