Job Summary
The City of Salem is looking for crew leaders to perform skilled lead maintenance work in the Water Distribution and Wastewater Collections sections of Public Works. This is a great opportunity for candidates that have a Commercial Driver's license or have worked in the construction trades but do not want to travel. The majority of work assignments are within a 10-mile radius.

We are in search for candidates who are knowledgeable in safe work practices, demonstrate positive customer service skills, and be able to prioritize work and assign projects.The crew leader reports to, and works under the general direction of, the Wastewater Collections Repair and Maintenance Field Supervisor. The assignments and objectives are prescribed, but the methods are not typically reviewed nor controlled while the work is in progress. The employee is expected to take the initiative in solving most problems of detail, except those which are new or unusually complex in nature. Supervision of other staff is not normally a requirement of this classification, but staff may provide general direction and leadership to seasonal staff, other career staff, or inmate labor.

Typical Assignments for Wastewater Collections Crew Leader:
  • Direct a small crew in the routine maintenance, repair, and construction of sewer lines, manholes, cleanouts, and associated appurtenances.
  • Direct a small crew in the routine television inspection of sewer lines, documenting irregularities. Includes tapping sewer lines for new services, relocating utility service lines, and realigns manhole covers or caps former service line access. Install vaults and manholes, realigns service access, and performs other related services.

Additional responsibilities for Crew Leaders in both Water/Wastewater sections include:
  • Plan materials, supplies, equipment, and personnel needed to complete assignments.
  • Monitor progress of work at site and resolves field problems as they occur.
  • Interpret maps, diagrams, written instructions, and specifications in completing work assignments.
  • Prepare or reviews for accuracy information concerning time, materials, and personnel time records. Update maps and computer databases as needed.
  • Retrieve information from computer records and other files to determine condition or location of facilities.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check, drug test (including marijuana), and physical exam.
  • Must have a valid Oregon Class A Commercial Driver's license and a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standard.
  • High school diploma or GED, trade of professional training in area of specialty, and three years of experience involving the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of public improvements area of discipline or other facilities, including some lead responsibilities,or any equivalent combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
  • Water/Wastewater Certification preferred, but not required.
  • Preference points will be given to those with a tank endorsement.
