Institutional Solutions is an independent, internal consulting team that evaluates complex cross-functional challenges and develops solutions that address the needs of the overall institution. The team takes on a wide range of high priority initiatives and works collaboratively with senior management to establish ways for Pew to work faster, smarter, and more effectively. Institutional Solutions applies a broad range of analytical approaches based on a pragmatic, results-focused approach to each project. The team facilitates the development of Pew's mid-year and year-end Institutional Work Plan, helping to identify mission-critical initiatives and priorities for senior management and the board. Institutional Solutions also facilitates the annual planning process for the organization's seven operating departments.

Position Overview
The Principal Associate will lead analysis and support the development of solutions for a variety of complex challenges and opportunities in several areas. The Principal Associate will lead or support workstreams on projects that help improve the effectiveness and efficiency of varied aspects of Pew's operating model. The Principal Associate will be a key player in a small team, leading meaningful, substantive analysis, and summarizing findings as part of a variety of projects. Team projects can last as long as twelve months. The Principal Associate position is designed to enable the candidate to build a wide range of analytical and project management skills, and to gain an institution-wide perspective of Pew.

This position will report to the Senior Manager, Institutional Solutions. The position is based in Washington, DC and is eligible for 60% telework.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Senior Manager, Institutional Solutions, the Principal Associate will be responsible for:
  • Researching and analyzing new and existing operating policies and processes that relate to Pew's operations, including benchmarking and best practices.
  • Developing qualitative and quantitative analysis on a wide range of topics, such as human resources, finance, real estate, information technology, communications, government relations, partnerships, fundraising, and other institution-wide topics.
  • Managing independent, specific work streams within larger projects. Collaborating with the rest of the team to help deliver internal consultative projects to other Pew colleagues.
  • Communicating findings and recommendations through written presentations and materials.
  • Distilling large quantities of data and information into summary findings that are cohesive, well organized, and easily understood.
  • Developing and maintaining strong knowledge of Pew's operating models and practices.


Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum of six years professional experience.
  • Experience in quantitative and qualitative analysis, including the ability to conduct primary and secondary research, transform unstructured data into structured data, and summarize data into key points or metrics.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills, including the ability to synthesize complex information into succinct points, and the ability to effectively communicate insights and make recommendations.
  • Demonstrated independence in establishing and managing own work routines, including some prior experience with project management skills and tools.
  • Sound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive or confidential matters.
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel is required. Microsoft Project, Visio, and database experience (e.g. Peoplesoft, Salesforce, etc.) preferred. Prior experience working for or with Pew, or a similar organization in terms of the nature of the work, is preferred.
  • Prior experience in strategic planning, strategy, innovation, operations, financial analysis or change management is a plus.

Travel

Occasional day travel to Philadelphia (once or twice a year) and up to one national conference expected.
