Job Summary
Begin an exciting career with the City of Salem Police Department in our new Police Facility as a Staff Assistant!

The City of Salem Police Department is seeking a service-oriented individual who is interested in working in local government and a team-oriented collaborative environment. This position is situated in the office suite with the Chief of Police and upper Command Staff. Duties will include working with a variety of confidential issues and will include preparation of agendas for meetings as well as attendance and record keeping at meetings. This position supports others within the department who have different requests, deadlines, and management styles, therefore, it requires the skills to be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and adjust to constant interruptions.

The Staff Assistant is also responsible for providing general administrative support to their assigned unit or department. Essential job functions may include answering phones, responding to varied inquiries, explaining policies and procedures, routing mail and correspondence, balancing, posting, and correcting a variety of financial documents such as purchase orders, requisitions, taking and transcribing minutes for various meetings, assisting others in the office where needed. You will be required to apply for and receive a notary certification.

The successful candidate will possess the skills necessary to provide exemplary customer service, effectively communicate both verbally and in writing, quickly learn and apply a variety of City and department policies and procedures to the appropriate work situation, maintain good working relationships with other employees, agencies and the public, and perform work effectively during changing priorities and interruptions.

The Salem Police Staff Assistant Position normally will work Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. but there may be occasions where adjusted work schedules or overtime is necessary.

This recruitment is for Salem Police Department, but may be used for other multiple departments within the City of Salem and may be used to create a six-month eligible list of qualified applicants for future hiring needs in other departments. If made a job offer in a department you do not wish to work in, you may decline the offer and ask to be left in the eligibility list or if you are no longer interested, you may withdraw your application and be removed from the eligibility list.

You must attach and submit your typing certificate with your application. The City will accept proctored tests taken in the last 12 months from August 30, 2020 to September 6, 2021.

What are the minimum qualifications?

  • Must pass the pre-employment background check.
  • Must have an Oregon Driver license and have a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards or alternate means of participating in meetings and coordinating work at other locations.
  • High school graduate or GED, five years of progressively responsible clerical experience, including operating a personal computer and accurate data entry/transcription, or any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
  • Typing certificate required - 40 wpm with 95% accuracy rate.
  • Must pass a criminal background check necessary to obtain Criminal Justice Information System clearance and Law Enforcement Data System certification within 30 days of hire (clearance must be maintained throughout employment).
  • Bilingual skills preferred.
