We are seeking a 5th-8th Grade Latin Teacher to teach 3 days of our 7-day teaching cycle. This is a 10-month, full-time assignment, but there is an option of teaching part-time if the candidate is interested in only teaching Latin. This position beings in August 2022 and ends June 2023. Standard work hours per the Faculty/Staff Handbook.
We are looking for candidates who bring creativity, excellent relationship skills and a collaborative approach to their craft. Our faculty models a spirit of collaboration and inquiry to inspire students to explore, question and communicate in ways that will shape the future. Candidates will be culturally competent with effective organizational and classroom management skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary in order to develop interpersonal relationships with faculty, parents, and students. We are committed to ongoing curricular and pedagogical anti-racist work, and we seek a candidate who shares that commitment and who can contribute to our efforts. We search out opportunities for professional growth and encourage reflection on our own practices. Our ideal candidate has a classics background and can easily teach Latin has a Classics background and can use it to enrich students' introductory Latin experience with a broad range of culture topics and primary source texts in translation.. We are looking for someone who enjoys teaching Middle School students as young as 6th grade. We would be particularly eager to hear about any interest, background, or expertise in modern engagement with the classical world and gender studies and other interdisciplinary scholarship.
The Candidate
You have a passion for teaching Latin, you enjoy and understand young adolescents, and you have training and relevant teaching experience at the middle school level. You are able to make the Latin language and Roman culture accessible to middle school students. You have a deep knowledge of classical mythology, Roman culture and history, and Latin roots. You demonstrate flexibility and resourcefulness and you are motivated to grow and to collaborate with others. You have exceptional writing, communication, and interpersonal skills. You want to be involved in ongoing professional development. You interact effectively and sensitively with a diverse population of students, faculty and parent body.
