SmithBucklin, a 100 percent employee-owned association management company, is looking for an Operations and Governance Manager to join our Healthcare & Scientific Industry Practice in Washington DC. The Operations and Governance Manager will support and oversee activities for one of our Healthcare Clients. The ideal candidate will have a sharp business mind and proven experience working with volunteer-governed certification or accreditation organizations. Success will depend on quickly understanding the client's established and complex business processes and, over time, suggesting and implementing improvements that lead to greater operational efficiencies and productivity. Reporting to the client's COO, we seek a highly skilled professional in successfully navigating a fast-paced service organization working successfully with the client's remote employees, SmithBucklin professionals in our DC office, volunteers, and outside contractors. Finally, the candidate must have the ability to develop and grow trust, diversity, and inclusion among the client's volunteer leaders and professional staff.

Primary responsibilities

  • Support the Board of Commissioners (BOC) and executive committee with meeting preparation, briefing materials, priority-setting, and completion of action items
  • Support the Governance Committee with meeting preparation, briefing materials, priority-setting, and completion of action items
  • Support the Eligibility Committee with meeting preparation, briefing materials, priority-setting, and completion of action items
  • Work with the CEO and Financial Management staff to support the annual budgeting and forecasting process
  • Track annual organizational metrics to present to the BOC at the winter meeting and for the Annual Report.
  • Partner with CEO and COO to shape and implement strategies and policies for the improvement of administrative functions


  • Highly professional, ethical, mission-oriented with the ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a deadline-driven environment
  • Experienced with managing healthcare certification or accreditation processes
  • Able to protect confidential information and maintain a sense of discretion
  • Known for exhibiting finance acumen and an accountability for accuracy
  • Able to travel as much as 25%
  • An effective verbal and written communicator
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Confident in their use and oversight of technology
  • Willing to learn, master, and improve complex organizational operations
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams)
