Fermilab's Security/Communications Center is seeking an On-Call Emergency Dispatcher to join the Communications Center Team. The selected candidate will be responsible for providing telecommunication and emergency services for the Fermilab site for a maximum of 1000 working hours per year. This includes receiving, evaluating and prioritizing emergency and non-emergency telephone calls and emergency medical, fire, security and law enforcement radio requests in a 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week environment.

You Will
  • Monitor and operate Fermilab and local fire and law enforcement emergency radio channels and Fermilab emergency warning systems.
  • Receive, place and redirect intra-Laboratory local, long distance, conference, and over-seas calls; provide directory assistance; send, receive and log facsimile messages.
  • Respond to customer questions, concerns and complaints about Laboratory services and operations.
  • Receive emergency calls; follow protocol in asking appropriate questions and notify appropriate personnel, including fire, injuries/accidents, and security/law enforcement; elicit necessary information; transform requests into proper radio message format, determine jurisdiction and dispatch proper emergency services, personnel and equipment; record and monitor status of personnel and equipment and coordinate operations through radio and telephone communications.
  • Monitor site-wide fire, security, and utility alarm enunciation system. Correlate activated alarms with system testing activities and irregularity reports; dispatch responders as required.
  • Receive and forward requests for Fermilab assistance and mutual aid for off-site law enforcement and fire/medical emergencies.
  • Activate Emergency Operating Center (EOC) procedures when directed.
  • Maintain logs, records, call lists, and emergency instructions; complete and submit reports as required.
  • Keep informed of current and applicable Fermi Security and Fire Department policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Conduct equipment checks and report/log deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Monitor administrative two-way communications systems for other Laboratory groups and dispatch required services using standard radio code system.
  • Perform other administrative duties such as data entry, tasks described in the Fermilab Security Department (FSD) Performance Assurance Plan, etc.
  • Abide by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.

We Are Looking For
  • High School diploma (or equivalent) and have a minimum of 6+ months' relevant work experience. 1+ years' relevant work experience is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Possess basic computer skills (MS Office)
  • Demonstrated ability to execute duties in high-stress situations
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team setting
  • Must be able to work overtime, holidays, weekends and any shift (1st, 2nd or 3rd)
  • APCO certification preferred
  • Emergency dispatch/communication experience preferred
  • This position has a 11:30pm start time
