The Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner demonstrates clinical expertise and leadership skills. The Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner (OH NP) uses advanced skills in evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of employees with diseases and adverse health conditions. The OHS NP plans and manages therapeutic regimens for the acute and chronic health issues that may affect the patient population at any given time. The OH NP provides support and guidance in anticipation of an employees need to communicate or express concern of a health condition. The OH NP is able to provide education on disease processes, and prevention. The OH NP is able to provide psychosocial and emotional sustenance to provide reassurance and continual support for growth and balance. The OH NP is also able to provide wellness initiatives that foster the employees level to one of optimal health.

The OH NP is accountable for the care provided, including primary prevention, quality of care, employee satisfaction, efficient use of resources, and ethical behavior.

The OH NP has prescriptive authority through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health- Drug Control Program (DPH-DCP) in the Commonwealth of MA.

The OH NP is also able to provide wellness initiatives that foster the employees level to one of optimal health. </span></p> <p style="margin: 0px;"> </p> <p style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">The OH NP is accountable for the care provided, including primary prevention, quality of care, employee satisfaction, efficient use of resources, and ethical behavior.</span></p> <p style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">The OH NP has prescriptive authority through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health- Drug Control Program (DPH-DCP) in the Commonwealth of MA.</span></p> <p style="margin: 0px;"><br /><br /></p> <img src="https://analytics.click2apply.net/v/Pm2GbxuZLxz4CMNmTgDwa"> <br/><br/><p style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">The scope of practice and the responsibilities of the Adult Nurse Practitioner in the Occupational Health Service involve the assessment and treatment of employees through the following activities:</span></p> <ul> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Obtaining medical, health, occupational and environmental health, and psycho-social histories.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Performing pre-placement health screenings for any individual staff member joining the Institute (paid, not paid, and volunteers).</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Reviews immunization and infectious disease immunity history; provides immunizations/vaccinations that are required to be cleared to join as a member of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), in accordance with DFCI's Infection Control and Occupational Health Policies.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Conducts annual Tuberculosis screening for designated staff per the DFCI's Infection Control and Occupational Health Policies.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Performing physical examinations as deemed appropriate.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic tests.</span></li> </ul> <p style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Evaluating, treating, and managing occupational injuries and illnesses including but not limited to: musculoskeletal injuries; chemical, environmental, infectious disease exposures, and blood borne pathogen exposures.</span></p> <p style="margin: 0px;"> </p> <ul> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Provides guidance regarding work restriction and or job modification when necessary and communicating any changes to the employee and to the manager.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">In addition to providing evaluation of a work related issue, the OHS NP provides case management services collaborating with the worker's compensation insurance carrier, and providing communication with the employee and manager.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Performs Fitness for Duty evaluations including those for drug and alcohol use on the job or premises.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Performs medical surveillance assessments as necessary.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Provides triage for emergencies within the department.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Provides care and appropriate referral for employees who suffer non work-related injured or illnesses. May collaborate with the employee's primary care provider (with a written consent), for referral and follow-up as needed. </span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Collaborates with the Leave Coordinator on FMLA and other leave cases.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Is able to assess the need for an accommodation to help promote appropriate employee functioning while on the job. Will follow the ADA guidelines for this process, and collaborate with other departments such as with the employee's department Manager, Employee Relation's business partners, along with the Leave Coordinator.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Communicates and makes appropriate referrals with the employee who seeks advice for non work-related health conditions.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Performing simple office procedures (i.e. burn dressings and debridement, nail trephination, suture removal) as deemed competent by the supervising physician.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Prescribe medications dependant on the condition presented.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Prescribing non-pharmacologic therapies (i.e. PT/OT) when appropriate</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Providing health education with regard to injury and illness, disease processes, treatment plans, promotion of self-care, and prevention.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Documents and assures medical record completion in a timely fashion</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Collaborates with the Medical Director, Human Resources, Environmental Health and Safety, Infection Control, the Employee Assistance Program, and other Institute staff in order to promote optimal health and safety for all.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Maintain compliance with OSHA, MDPH, CDC regulations and guidelines along with DFCI polices and procedures.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Participates in development, maintenance, and updating of OHS policies and procedures as requested by the Director.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Collaborates with the OHS team with designing, maintaining, and reporting on quality improvement activities within the department.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Attends meetings and serves on Committees as requested or required.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Collaborates with the other OHS team to ensure appropriate office/clinic coverage and continuity of service during regular working hours.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .25in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Practices in accordance with written guidelines in compliance with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Maintains prescriptive privileges as defined by the MADPH. Uses prescriptive authority responsibly for all medications and if DEA licensed for Schedule II through V controlled substances in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.</span></li> </ul> <p style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The OH Nurse Practitioner has authorization to practice in an expanded role in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in addition:</span></p> <ul> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Has a current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Master's Degree in Nursing.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Satisfactory completion of a formal education program from a NLN or ANA accredited program for Nurse Practitioners.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Has current certification from a nationally recognized accrediting body approved by the MA Board of Registration in Nursing for Nurse Practitioners: American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Minimum of 24 contact hours in pharmacotherapeutics beyond generic nursing education. </span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Minimum of 2-5 years professional Registered Nursing experience preferred. </span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Has 1-2 years recent experience in Occupational Health, 3-5 years is strongly preferred.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Registered with the MADPH for prescriptive writing privileges, along holding a federal DEA number is desired.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Board certified in the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses is desirable.</span></li> </ul> <p style="margin: 0px;"> </p> <br /><br /> <ul> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Strong communication skills in verbal and writing ability.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Demonstrates the ability to be an effective member of an interdisciplinary team.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Able to collaborate with various cultures, personalities, and levels within the organization.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Demonstrates critical thinking, problem solving skills, and ability to make independent decisions.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Possesses strong organizational skills.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Adapts easily to changing situations.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Possesses strong clinical assessment skills and demonstrates appropriate diagnoses and care.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Is able to perform phlebotomy.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Demonstrates strong computer skills with Word, Excel and Microsoft Outlook.</span></li> <li style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">Able to maintain confidentiality in accordance the federal regulations and DFCI policy.</span></li> </ul> <p style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"><strong>Working Conditions:</strong></span></p> <p style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">The OH Nurse Practitioner works in a busy clinic setting with an office, reception area, exam rooms and consultation space, along with the rest of the team. In such a setting there may be exposure to infectious diseases, through airborne transmission or contact with blood and body fluids. </span></p> <p style="margin: 0px;"> </p> <p style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"><strong>Patient Population:</strong></span></p> <p style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri, sans-serif;">The population that the Occupational Health Service and the OH NP who is a member of the team serve is varied culturally, in language, ethnicity, and norms.
