Job Summary: (Short statement of the jobs purpose)

Mechanical Engineering position with emphasis in electronic packaging. The scope of the position requires a range of responsibilities spanning requirements definition, conceptual trade studies, design/analysis/packaging of RF and digital equipment, and integration activities. Other responsibilities includeparticipating in engineering analysis and evaluation efforts related to complex analog, digital, RF and integration hardware, documenting design approaches, establishing design verification and validation procedures, and developing plans to manufacture assemblies and major sub-assemblies. Duties will also include the design, assembly and maintenance of production test fixtures as required. To bring the designs to reality, mechanical engineers will develop and maintain partnerships with suppliers and generate necessary requisitions for engineering project activities for which they are responsible.

Ideal candidates will show an ability to develop innovative solutions to challenging design constraints, a willingness to take on new systems and engineering designs, a drive to identify and mitigate possible downstream obstacles, and offer customers unique solutions allowing the team to maintain a competitive edge. Essential Functions*: (Listing of specific duties in each area in order of importance)

  • Create complex mechanical designs and execute layouts for products
  • Create 3D models for design feasibility and interference detection.
  • Produce 2D working drawings from 3D models.
  • Analyze designs to determine suitability for intended purpose and environments, including (but not limited to), thermal and structural with an emphasis on vibration and shock, fatigue, etc. Use tools as required to supply back-up data.
  • Preparation and application of geometric dimension and tolerance analyses of designs to assure manufacturability and interchangeability.
  • Directly interface with members of the product development team to produce high quality/dependable products and resolve technical issues.
  • Assures that engineering drawings correctly reflect design intent.
  • Creates and implements engineering change notices.
  • Interprets and applies Military, industry and customer standards.
  • Preparation of materials needed to support engineering design reviews.
  • Attendance and participation in Internal and Customer attended technical interchange and design review meetings.
  • Conduct extensive investigations to understand root cause and corrective action for field failures
  • Provide input into new products, processes, standards, and plans
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to develop an accurate accounting of engineering hours required/expended for each project.
  • Support Bids and Proposal efforts to assist Ultralife in winning new and follow-on business.
  • Provide leadership/mentorship to others within the Ultralife organization.
  • Development of complete mechanical design packages (layouts, details, BOMs).
  • Provide guidance to production/manufacturing operators in the assembly of production hardware.
  • Must be able to work onsite in Virginia Beach, VA (not remote)
  • Other appropriate duties as assigned.

Education / Training / Skills / Experience:


  • Education: 2 years post-Secondary/ Associates Degree and a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience OR a BS in Mechanical and minimum 5 years of prior relevant experience
  • Must have experience with the use of 3D CAD programs to create solid models and 2D detail, assembly, and installation drawings. Current experience with CREO (Pro/ENGINEER).
  • Must have strong analytic and communication skills; ability to coach, motivate technical personnel.
  • Must have sound knowledge of design criteria and complex activities.
  • Must be able to obtain a Security Clearance.
  • Good computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office is required
  • Must be detail oriented, timely, highly organized, flexible, quick learner, self-starter and reliable team member.
  • Must be willing to travel occasionally both domestically and internationally.
  • Although infrequent, must be able to work weekends and overtime when required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Windchill PLM software and with multiple CAD packages including SolidWorks and CREO
  • Familiarity with 3D design integration of mechanical and ECAD components and structure.
  • Understanding of how to design electronics enclosures for EMI mitigation
  • Understanding and experience designing for both military and commercial environments
  • Experience with designing thermal management solutions
  • Knowledge of designing to meet MIL-STD-810 requirements
  • Self-motivated and ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Strong team player who can incorporate input from others and can generate consensus through inclusion.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment with an emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
