The Minneapolis College of Art and Design seeks a part-time temporary instructor and curriculum developer for a new initiative, the MCAD FutureReady Teens and Digital Design program.

Program Description: MCAD FutureReady: Teens and Digital Design is a program which empowers Minneapolis youth to develop 21st Century skills in web design and development and user experience (UX) supporting them to envision and realize a path to future employment as well as educational and entrepreneurial opportunities. The program also helps students cultivate important soft skills that are central to a productive and meaningful creative life.

The program will consist of a 10-week class, running on Saturdays, offered twice per year (January through mid-March and April through mid-June. The program is a partnership with three Minneapolis Public Schools (FAIR, Roosevelt, and Wellstone) to serve a diverse high school student population. Each student will receive a $500 stipend to incentivize active engagement, participation, and success.

Primary Function: The instructor is responsible for developing the course curriculum in the fall and teaching the course during the two 10-week sessions in the spring.

Specific duties include:

  • During the fall develop a 10-week curriculum geared towards high school students with a focus on the history and foundations of web design, and an exploration of how to actually implement designs through web development. Topics to include are conceptual knowledge, like information architecture, graphic design, and principles of typography, as well as concrete technical skills like file management, code editing and usability testing. This course also provides students with a solid base of foundational skills using HTML and CSS, with an introduction to JavaScript.
  • Teach the two 10-week courses during the spring to approximately 15 high school students. The course meets Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. with lunch for the students prior.
  • Provide supervision and guidance to program Teaching Assistants.
  • Work with the MCAD FutureReady Program Coordinator to ensure student participation and success in the program.
  • Serve as a mentor and establish a positive tone for students. Communicate expectations for success in the program and communicate any issues to Continuing Education staff.
  • Maintain communication with the Continuing Education office regarding any program or class needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Rate of pay:

This position includes 40 hours of curriculum development at $31 per hour and 80 hours of teaching at $75 per hour ($7240 in total over the fall and spring semesters.)



Required qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in studio art or design; education; or related field. Advanced degree preferred.

A background in graphic design; web design; programming; UX design; or related field.

A minimum of 3-years curriculum development and teaching experience.

Experience working with high school students.

Experience working in a higher education environment.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Passion for arts education and/or working with teens.

Passion for creating positive, accessible learning environments for all students.

Energetic with excellent organizational skills.

Experience supervising staff/teams.

Excellent relationship-building skills.

Ability to problem solve creatively and strategically.

Proficiency with Google Docs, Spreadsheets, and Forms.

Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills required.
