Position Purpose

The Paint Shop is responsible for preparing and coating the interior and exterior walls, ceilings, and other surfaces of the College's buildings and structures, including furniture. The Master Painter prepares surfaces for new coating materials, mixing coating materials according to specifications, applies coating materials to a variety of surfaces where appearance as well as surface protection are important, and is responsible for the care and maintenance of the tools and equipment employed in the painter's trade. Under minimal supervision, the Master Painter may either work independently or as part of a team.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities
  • Inspects work sites to determine procedure, material, and equipment needed, as required. After work is completed, inspects/audits to confirm that work order and expectations are met.
  • Selects the appropriate tools, uses coating materials specified, and decides on methods and techniques to use.
  • Removes such things as rust, scale, wax, dirt, and old paint or varnish from surfaces, including bricks and masonry, by using paint remover and/or other chemicals, sanding , wire brushing, buffing, and scraping, so that materials will adhere properly.
  • Uses stains, sprays and finishes to repair and refinish furniture parts or architectural woodwork to match existing product.
  • Smooths surfaces using sandpaper, steel wool, or brushes.
  • Fills nail holes, cracks and joints with putty, plaster, or other filler.
  • Installs special wall covering to prevent surface cracking while doing interior painting.
  • Masks, spackles and putties surfaces, and removes accessories as required.
  • Selects pre-mixed paints or creates appropriate color paints or stains as needed .
  • Thins, stirs and mixes coating materials according to specific directions or following written directions that explain how to apply and use prepared solvents.
  • Uses mechanical mixer for volume blending.
  • Applies coating materials such as primer, paints, varnishes and shellacs with brushers, rollers, spray guns, and other related methods and techniques.
  • Uses gloss, semi-gloss, and special paints, enamels, varnishes, stains, lacquers, shellacs and epoxies.
  • Simulates wood grain, marble, brick and tile effects .
  • Ensures that coating finish meets surface protection requirements.
  • Ensures the protection of surrounding areas.
  • Ensures proper placement of ladders and scaffolding.
  • Cleans and maintains brushes and painting equipment.
  • Performs safe Personal Protective Equipment ( PPE ) practices.

Working Conditions:

  • Works from ladders, scaffolds, platforms, aerial lifts.
  • Work requires bending, kneeling, standing, climbing, and working in stretched, cramped or awkward positions.
  • Work involves regular lifting, carrying, or holding objects weighing up to 80lbs.
  • Work is performed indoors, outdoors, in bad weather, and in areas that are dirty, or smoky and where fumes (e.g., tar) are present.
  • Is exposed to cuts and bruises and more serious injuries while cutting glass, or working on ladders, scaffolds, etc.
  • Work involves wearing special or protective clothing such as aprons or overalls, gloves, and goggles.
