The Managing Editor is a seven-month contract position with potential for extension. The Managing Editor will be responsible for establishing best practice and future requirements of the PNAS Nexus editorial office. The role will include overseeing the journals editorial office staff, as well as optimizing the workflows and systems involved in submission and peer review. The position manages operations for the editorial office, including ensuring quality control guidelines and editorial policies are adhered to, creating process documents, advising on best practice configurations and workflows, and serving as a key liaison with editorial board members.

Editorial office oversight:
  • Act as primary escalation point for author and editorial board queries and requests, including monitoring communications within the PNAS Nexus editorial office inbox.
  • Supervise performance of editorial office staff, including providing best practice guidance on proper handling of manuscripts and communications.
  • Provide direction to editorial office staff for responding to production queries, including requests for corrections
  • Maintain Standard Operating Procedures manual and ensure it is updated with the latest workflows, policies, and best practice guidance.

Workflows, processes, system:
  • Act as primary technical lead and systems expert for the eJournalPress submission system, including ensuring that all workflow processes and configurations are streamlined and optimized to deliver an exemplary experience for authors, reviewers, and editors.
  • Oversee and monitor the creation and progress of eJournalPress tickets to ensure the timely completion of system configuration updates and enhancements.
  • Regularly review the eJournalPress system and workflows for potential development enhancements.
  • Monitor manuscripts in process and address potential delays to ensure time to decision targets and other key performance indicators (KPIs) are met.

  • Prepare monthly editorial status reports on submission volume, acceptance rate, turnaround times, and other KPIs as requested.
  • Track and report on performance of Editorial Board members.
  • Prepare agendas, materials, and background for regular communications/meetings with key editorial and NAS leadership, including in support of the OUP Publisher and other internal stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with the Scientific Editor to identify and report on gaps in Editorial Board coverage to Editorial Board leadership.

Editorial team support and liaison:
  • Serve as primary representative of the PNAS Nexus editorial office in presentations and meetings with OUP internal stakeholders as well as the NAS and editorial board members.
  • Escalate problematic papers and appeals to Editorial Board as necessary.
  • Provide training to editors on the journals processes, policies, and workflows.

  • Prior editorial or publishing experience
  • Experience with online submission systems

  • Excellent attention to detail

Location: The position can be done in a remote setting in the United States

This position is a seven month contract role.
