Job Summary: This position is responsible for the maintenance and management of plant collections in the greenhouses and nursery through sound cultural practices, care and planning. Propagates plants from seeds, cuttings, divisions, etc. for indoor and outdoor displays, collections, Grown at the Gardens and other special programs. Develops and maintains annual displays in the Orangery. Provides support to Horticulture department and Denver Botanic Gardens as a whole as needed. Manages directly and indirectly horticulture staff, interns, seasonal staff, and volunteers as assigned. Position requires travel between York Street and Chatfield locations.

Qualifications/Experience: Bachelors degree in horticulture, botany or related field from a four-year college and minimum 4 to 5 years experience in botanic or public garden setting; or 6 to 8 years of horticultural experience in botanic or public garden setting and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong experience in the care and cultivation of a wide variety of plant types, with demonstrated proficiency and hands-on skills in managing greenhouse and nursery production and propagation. Has a mastery of techniques and requirements in specialty area. Supervisory experience preferred. Possession of Pesticide Applicators License required. Proficiency in common computer programs (Outlook, Excel, Word); horticultural accession software (BG Base); ability to safely operate typical horticultural tools, equipment and chemicals; strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are essential. A valid Colorado drivers license, plus an acceptable driving record and auto insurance are required. Candidate must have their own reliable car or similar vehicle.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Applies appropriate horticultural propagation techniques to a wide variety of plants using prescribed techniques and other methods including seed collection, taking cuttings, plant division, grafting and air layering.
  • Maintains assigned greenhouses and nursery at both York Street and Chatfield locations using appropriate horticultural techniques to include plant maintenance, pest control, environmental controls, transplanting, fertilizing, watering, pruning, organizing, inventorying and data collection and management.
  • Maintains records documenting germination results and methods employed in propagation of each species.
  • Utilizes Garden Works database for management of propagation and production.
  • Develops annual display plans for the Orangery and institutes plans, including but not limited to production/propagation for display, ordering plants and maintaining display.
  • Serves as a resource for plant propagation for the green industry and the Horticulture Department.
  • Responsible for the Grown at the Gardens and Index Seminum programs, developing annual plans and goals.
  • Responsible for developing work plans and budgets for team. Manages spending within budget.
  • Responsible for the day to day oversight and management of assigned staff, teams volunteers, interns and seasonal employees within guidelines of department objectives and goals.
  • Works with Director on appropriate motivation, planning and disciplinary actions.
  • In consultation with Director and Senior Horticulture Team, plans, implements and oversees the ordering, propagation, and installation of permanent and temporary displays.
  • Practices integrated pest management when dealing with plant disease and insect problems. Brings such issues to attention of Senior Horticulture Team. Safely applies chemicals in accordance with Colorado law and insures accurate chemical logs are maintained by team members.
  • Participates in education programs and conducts tours when required, including but not limited to evenings and weekends. Actively participates in writing and publishing articles, developing content for signs and interpretation, and creating and coordinating education programs. Collaborates with Education, other Denver Botanic Gardens departments and outside resources as necessary.
  • Ensures up-to-date accurate documentation and labeling of all plant material assigned to team.
  • Keeps abreast of trends & developments in field and applies appropriate changes.
  • Participate in design, planning and evaluation of gardens and/or collections.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • May assist Director of Horticulture and/or HR in interviewing candidates for seasonal, intern, and full-time staff positions.
  • As requested, may assist in grant writing and/or work with Development department on presentations or tours.
  • Actively involved in professional organization or plant society.
  • Collaborates closely with Director, curators and other horticultural staff in developing positive team-building techniques.
  • Provides courteous, accurate responses to inquiries from management, co-workers, volunteers, members and visitors both face-to-face and via telephone.
  • Participates in Denver Botanic Gardens special events, which include but are not limited to, Plant Sale, Pumpkin Fest, Corn Maze and Blossoms of Light assisting in planning, set-up, and teardown.
  • Assist Horticulture and Operations teams with snow removal during winter months and other seasonal tasks.
  • Works with all departments to assure highest quality experience for all Denver Botanic Gardens visitors
  • Consistently uses and promotes correct safety procedures in all work.
  • Maintains positive and satisfactory working relationships with managers, co-workers, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Maintains a positive, helpful and solution-oriented demeanor at all times.
  • Performs other duties as requested by management.
