Each year, the Covenant House federation reaches tens of thousands of youth through affiliated agencies in six countries, forging the largest movement for youth overcoming homelessness and trafficking across North and Central America.

General Description: Manager, Grants and Foundation Relations is responsible for the full life and cross-functional grant management process. This includes building out the structure of all grants from prospect research to gathering documentation, proposal writing, completion and grant reporting with the goal to seek and secure funding on behalf of Covenant House Michigan. The Manager, Grants and Foundation Relations will use technology, project management tools, and process improvement strategies to expand grant revenue, as well as establish and strengthen relationships with a diverse base of funder program officers.
The desired candidate is a self-starter with significant experience in writing for a variety of grant funders. The candidate is an avid grant researcher with a proven track record of identifying new revenue sources and preparing exceptional proposals and reports that result in successful grant awards. Has a deep appreciation of our mission for serving youth experiencing homelessness. Is well versed in government grant programs as well as private grants and will have a robust understanding of the granting guidelines of each.
Educational/Work Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor degree in English, Marketing, Human Services or related field required.
  • Minimum 5-8 years' grant writing experience.
  • Demonstrated success in securing grant funding.
  • Ability to work within tight grant and reporting deadlines and manage multiple projects.
  • Valid Michigan Driver's license with acceptable driving record as designated by agency.
  • Proficient in MS Office and fundraising database management software (i.e., Raiser's Edge).
  • Demonstrated success in securing grant funding and crafting funding proposals in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Expertise in interpreting complex and technical grant funding requirements, submissions, and budget projections.
  • Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with diverse backgrounds
  • Proven success working in a collaborative manner with diverse populations and external stakeholders to build bridges that strengthen relationships, trust and credibility.
  • Demonstrated experience in the full execution of grants (government and foundation) from development to implementation to reporting.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Manage all aspects of the grant process, securing long-term financial and program support from a variety of sources.
  • Monitor and report regularly on the status of grant applications.
  • Collaborate with department leadership to obtain the information needed to produce competitive proposals/reports.
  • Maintain grants timetable for recurring foundation opportunities and manage an annual grants calendar.
  • Research, write and submit grants to government entities, private foundations and corporation foundations to raise funds for programs and agency operations across two (2) campuses.
  • Initiate preparation of applications/proposals with accuracy, requisite creativity, thoroughness and attention to details, including scheduling and deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and strategically to accomplish varied projects in a fast-paced collaborative environment.
  • Deliver completed grants and reports to grantors by mandatory deadlines.
  • Timely input of grant reporting criteria into Raiser's Edge software.
  • Work with partner agencies to draft and collect Memoranda of Understanding as required.
  • Identify, communicate with, and maintain strategic relationships with community agencies, current and potential donors and funding sources to raise and grow funding.
  • Develop and maintain a system of historical data/metrics related to submission of proposals, revenue generated, awarded, denied, current/past grant awards, and funder's expectations and guidelines.
  • Conducts ongoing grants research not limited to corporate foundation, federal and state grant forecasting to stay abreast of changing grant standards and proposal guidelines.
  • Maintains grants calendar including proposal deadlines and forecasting
  • Perform all other tasks as requested by the Chief Executive Officer and/or Associate Executive Director.
