Position Summary

Guggenheim Life and Annuity Company is seeking an experienced Manager to manage the Financial Reporting function and accountants. Reporting to the Vice President Accounting you will join a very collaborative team responsible for a variety of financial accounting, reporting, analysis and regulatory reporting functions that include reviewing financial statements, core earnings, regulatory communications and filings, and other ad hoc reports. The Manager manages and oversees other accountants, and provides input to management to aid in staff development.

The position is a working managerial role with responsibilities that must be completed directly by the manager in addition to supervising department staff. Work is performed on behalf of multiple insurance companies and entities within the Guggenheim Insurance group of companies and with multi-state jurisdictions and requirements.

This position presents an opportunity to apply your STAAT and GAAP reporting experience in a fast-paced and dynamic environment and broaden your knowledge of financial reporting concepts and practices. The role is located in Indianapolis (far north side).

Essential Job Functions

  • Manages financial reporting accountants including coaching and counseling, evaluating performance, conducting performance reviews, maintaining attendance records, ensuring department and company practices and procedures are followed, ensuring adequate coverage and assisting with the hiring process. Motivates staff to continuously provide highest level of service to internal and external customers within guidelines for accuracy, timeliness, and productivity.
  • Reviews various financial reports including STAT and GAAP financial statements, consolidated core earnings, analytic reports, and ad hoc reports, as requested.
  • Reviews and approves journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Manages the monthly and quarterly close process.
  • Assists with various audits of the company records, working with external auditors, internal auditors, various departments of insurance personnel, and other agents.
  • Maintains internal control processes for quarterly MAR compliance and documentation.
  • Prepares and reviews quarterly and annual Compliance/Regulatory filings.
  • Performs technical accounting research and prepares documentation summarizing the Company's positions on technical matters.
  • Assists in the implementation of new accounting guidance and regulatory requirements, as requested.


Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA and/or other finance designations preferred
  • Prior supervisory experience a plus
  • Excellent oral, written, listening, and ability to clearly articulate complex information to others
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and issues of all types
  • Ability to work effectively with all departments and affiliates
  • Experience working with large volumes of data
  • Ability to multi-task in order to meet strategic concurrent deadlines
  • Advanced working knowledge of insurance systems and controls
  • Advanced working knowledge of computer applications for the insurance and accounting/finance industries, plus solid skills with MS Excel and Word

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in Accounting or Finance; advanced degrees a plus
  • 5-6 years' related STAT and GAAP financial reporting and accounting experience with a focus on accounting practices and reporting for the insurance industry
