Background

PSI has a rapidly expanding portfolio of malaria programs in over 30 countries, worldwide, which accounts for more than a third of the total business of the organization. PSI's global strategy focuses on improving consumer powered healthcare through shaping market systems, shifting policy and funding and strengthening global capacity. For the Malaria Department this means moving quality malaria case management closer to consumers; bringing next generation ITNs and other novel vector control solutions to market; scaling response driven surveillance to accelerate malaria elimination progress and maximizing the value of drug-based prevention interventions, such as IPTi and SMC.

Consultancy Objective

PSI is seeking an experienced Malaria technical writing consultant to develop a malaria communications strategy that aligns with, and amplifies, our recently refreshed PSI Malaria strategy. The consultant will lead the development of a workplan associated with the communications strategy in order to identify and develop a pipeline of communication products that support the department to pitch and win strategically relevant funding. Such products will include the development of source language related to PSI Malaria key learnings, technical approaches and methodologies.



Application Requirements

  • A proposed work plan with estimated LOE per deliverable
  • CV or portfolio describing relevant experience
  • References from at least 2 previous clients or employers
  • Cost proposal to complete the planned work
  • A recent writing sample
  • Rate history

The application will be evaluated on technical capabilities, past performance, relevant relationships, cost reasonableness, and cost competitiveness.

Scope of Work
  • Development of a malaria communications strategy document
  • Development of a workplan to accompany the communications strategy document
  • Production of a pipeline of outputs that aligns with external conferences, fundraising opportunities, and external priorities.
  • Development of source language for funding opportunities related to PSI malaria capacity, technical approaches and methodologies.
  • Lead the production of technical outputs, including at least one peer review publication, three technical learning briefs, and three blog entries. To be determined based on the strategy document and agreed with the consultant.
  • Support technical staff as a co-author or contributor by providing content guidance, copy editing, design templates, and peer-review publication support.
  • Compose, accurate summaries of new evidence and key reports that can be used in fundraising, program design, research design, concept note development, or for program improvement. Number to be determined based on strategy.




Conditions
  • Place of work: Desk-based
  • Travel: None
  • Type of contract: Short-term individual consultancy
  • Period of Performance: Consultancy is anticipated to take place over a period of approximately four months but this is not anticipated to be full-time for the entire period.

Skill Set and Experience Requirements
  • Experience developing communication/dissemination plans and communicating technical content through external fora (in person and online)
  • There is a strong preference for a track record of proven malaria technical publications or communications experience (within past 5 years)
  • Track record of peer review publications
  • Ability to shape project learning content for different audiences and frame findings for internal learning and external influence
  • Adept at bringing together multiple information sources clearly and succinctly, and communicating technical content in creative and engaging ways
  • Strong communication and copyediting skills
  • Familiarity with digital communications and social media content management
  • Experience writing proposals/concepts notes, and receiving funding awards
  • The consultant must have the ability to work independently, excellent written and verbal communications, and with strong outcomes orientation that gets results.
