Job Description:

Amherst College invites current Amherst College seniors or recent graduates to apply for the Literary Editorial Fellow (LEF) position. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Green Dean/LEF will utilize their particular strengths and interests to support editorial, programmatic, educational, and operational projects at The Common. Specifically, the LEF will work alongside and assist the managing editor in editing and proofreading content for all platforms, shepherding print issues through production, organizing and executing events, and marketing and promoting the magazine and its activities. Special emphasis will be placed on working with the Literary Publishing Internship (LPI) students and coordinating activities with young LPI alumni.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Editorial
  • Read and evaluate submissions; help select submissions for publication
  • Hire and train volunteer readers
  • Lead editorial discussions of submissions
  • In collaboration with TC editors, work with authors to develop and refine their work
  • In collaboration with TC editors, write, edit, proofread and otherwise prepare content for TC Online
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication both in print and online

Programming & LPI
  • Help develop and execute programming on campus and at book festivals around the country
  • Represent TC at book fairs and conferences, liaising with colleagues at other magazines, colleges, and universities
  • Develop and oversee social and educational activities for LPI students and alumni, as well as other Amherst students
  • Help the managing editor and senior intern assign and track daily LPI operations and tasks

Marketing & Promotion
  • Draft email communications to a variety of constituents
  • Oversee development and execution of social media campaigns
  • Research and assist with adherence to industry best practices

Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor's Degree from Amherst College
  • One year working at The Common or equivalent publishing experience
  • Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community

Preferred:
  • A valid driver's license
  • Experience planning events; interest in working in publishing
