Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Laboratory Instructor (Casual Position, No Benefits) position. The Laboratory Instructor is a part-time, casual position, with no benefits. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Laboratory Instructor supports the teaching mission of the Physics and Astronomy faculty by improving student learning and the student experience in the introductory courses. The Laboratory Instructor helps supervise laboratory work in the introductory courses, and evaluates the reports students submit. The Laboratory Instructor also has the responsibility for coordinating with the faculty on pedagogical initiatives in the lab. Contributions also include providing individual attention and supplemental support.

Academic year:
  • Provide individual attention and supervised help to students in Introductory Physics courses and supplemental support outside the classroom
  • Assist faculty in introductory course lab sessions, grade lab reports, and hold office hours
  • Help students with the craft of writing scientific reports
  • Perform quality control tasks such as training and coordinating introductory course student lab teaching assistants, course graders and peer tutors

  • Bachelor's degree in physics or closely related field, Master's or PhD in physics preferred
  • Facility with Information Technology, using a variety of platforms and programs that are commonly used in scientific work
  • Ability to work independently
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Strong verbal and written communication, time-management, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Sensitivity to issues of confidentiality
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate course schedules
  • Experience or commitment to working with a diverse community
  • Experience serving as a teaching assistant for undergraduate labs preferred
