Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Greenhouse Manager position. This ia a full-time, year-round position, starting at $19.48 - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Greenhouse Manager manages and operates the Science Center Greenhouses and assists a diverse Faculty with laboratory preparations for various courses and research needs, maintaining the high standards of Faculty/Student research and experiments. The Greenhouse Manager is an active member of the Biology Department who participates in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming environment for everyone.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and operate department greenhouses including but not limited to assisting and collaborating in any plant-related aspects of research and courses, coordinating use of greenhouse space and material and maintaining a healthy/sanitary environment for a wide variety of plant species. Monitor and maintain environmental control systems, order supplies and materials within budgetary parameters, and apply fertilizers, insecticides, and fungicides as required. Experience or a commitment to integrated pest management (IPM) in the greenhouse.

  • Work with a diverse group of Biology Faculty and Teaching Assistants on preparing teaching laboratories for various Biology courses, maintaining inventory, and ordering course supplies. Also supervises a student assistant who supports regular maintenance in greenhouse, ensuring an inclusive experience.

R e quir e d:
  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus additional specialized training in a related field
  • 3 to 5 years of related experience with greenhouse or other plant maintenance practices
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to multi-task and work with flexibility between greenhouse and preparing teaching laboratories
  • Driver's license
  • Pesticide license or ability to attain a pesticide license within three months
  • Experience or a commitment to integrated pest management (IPM).
  • Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and lift test

P r e f e r r e d:
  • Associate's degree in a related field
  • More than 5 years experience in Greenhouse management.
