The Grants Accountant is responsible for maintaining financial, accounting and grant support services in order to meet the needs of the organization and the funders. This role requires approximately 20 hours of week of your focus to support the grants specific role at Episcopal Community Services.

The Grants Accountant works closely with the members of the Finance Team and ECS Program Managers. The Grants Accountant will focus heavily on budgeting, compliance, reporting and variance analysis functions.

  • Bachelors degree in business; accounting or finance majors strongly preferred or equivalent work experience.
  • 2 to 5 years Grant experience in a non-profit setting preferred.
  • Understanding of GAAP required, especially not-for-profit accounting principles.
  • Experience with MIP accounting system is preferred.


  • Strong problem-solving, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Outlook, etc.
  • Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality regarding all employee information.
  • Ability to be productive and accurate with assigned accounting tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare government grants deliverables including, but limited to, grant billing, journalizing grant-related transactions, preparing compliance reports/deliverables, and reconciling grants to the general ledger.
  • Monitor budgets, track actual expenditures throughout the year, and coordinate with programmatic staff to ensure the maximum use of contract funds.
  • Work with development staff and programmatic staff to prepare budget-related materials and supporting documentation required for submission with government grant proposals, renewals, budget modifications, etc.
  • Maintain all financial records for all grants including executed signed agreement, submission documentation, and closing letters.
  • Assist departments on developing processes that aide them on developing and tracking budget results. Candidate should become knowledgeable of applicable compliance requirements (e.g. allowable costs, prior approval requirements, etc.) and stay up to date with any relevant pronouncements.
  • Attend relevant training and stay abreast of developments in regulations to ensure that the organization remains compliant with applicable guidance.
  • Assist with annual GAAP and Uniform Guidance audits, as well as any grant-specific audits.
  • Execute other various accounting functions as needed.
