SUMMARY / OBJECTIVE

The Freeski Sport Director is responsible for leading the US Ski & Snowboard Freeski Program to global success by developing and implementing the strategy and culture from development to the elite level across all three disciplines. The Sport Director will provide the teams and programs at all levels with the appropriate structure and resources necessary for success at the highest level, in a sustainable way. This important leader must have broad experience at the development and elite levels, a successful track record, combined with a deep passion for skiing and developing talent at all levels. They must have ambition, drive and an inspiring vision for the future of our programs, with excellent communication skills in order to effectively lead our broad range of important stakeholders.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Athlete Experience

  1. Set the overall strategy for our freeski programs.
  2. Establish and implement the framework and infrastructure to support the strategy for the freeski programs.
  3. Institute programming to support a defined pathway to the podium for individual athletes in collaboration with Head Discipline Coaches.
  4. Engage with and support individual elite and rookie athlete development as needed to support integrated coaching and high performance staff.
  5. Ensure coaches are developing, supporting and inspiring each and every athlete to achieve their full potential.
  6. Responsible for oversight of individual athlete performance plans developed by the integrated team of Sport Coaches and High Performance staff.
  7. Holds elite athletes and coaches accountable to standards of performance plans.
  8. Ensures all programs and athletes fully leverage the resources available to further elevate performance.
  9. Work with the Snowboard and Freeski Development Director to set the strategy and prioritization for the various Rookie programs. Ensure seamless collaboration across Pro and Rookie teams.
  10. Determine and oversee training and development to create best in the world coaching staff.
  11. Establish team selection criteria, and oversee application of those criteria.
  12. Develop and manage all training area relationships, pushing to deliver better opportunities for athletes in the US and overseas.
  13. Ensure a culture of proactive communication, transparency, accountability and feedback between the organization, the coaches, the athletes, and other stakeholders.
  14. Continue to implement and improve upon Athlete Project Initiatives, such as: barometer adoption, athlete mentors, athlete liaisons, constructive athlete onboarding and offboarding, team building activities (for both staff and athletes), etc.

2. Operational Excellence

  1. Work closely with the CEO, Chief of Sport, CFO, Chief Revenue Officer and High Performance Director with regard to general program plans, progress and initiatives, fundraising, etc.
  2. Establish the method of operation, reporting structures, and staff duties for the Freeski Department, and facilitate the communications that follow those lines:
    • Manage head coaches and team managers including via regular reviews, sharing of best practices, professional development plans, organizational OKRs
    • Responsible for all department employee recruitment including identifying, attracting, retaining, and developing best in the world coaching talent to lead our Freeski teams
    • Create an inspiring, high performing atmosphere that enables empowerment, innovation and initiative to be adopted by all coaches, team managers and technicians.
    • Implement continued professional improvement opportunities for each staff member, according to their responsibilities and needs
  3. Contribute to the development of the Freeski sport education curriculum and materials, and present education content at relevant seminars
  4. Manage, oversee, and track the development and implementation of all levels of the snowboard strategic plan
  5. Coordinate World Cup and Olympic operations with the rest of the Organization
  6. Maintain a strong working relationship with FIS staff and committees and hold leadership positions with influence, as appointed
  7. Serve as a leading member of the Freeski Sport Committee, work closely with the Freeski Sport Committee Chairman and direct committee operations including agendas and committee materials
  8. Work directly with the Events Department to ensure that major events support the athletic direction of the freeski program
  9. Ensure effective operational logistics and coordination of all athlete preparation/competition schedules

3. Financial Performance

  1. Oversee the Freeski Departments financial budget and articulate and advocate for support within the Organization
  2. Ensure regular and timely expense reporting from all snowboard teams and programs, which conform to the reporting standards established by the CFO
  3. Provide monthly budget updates and financial forecasts with the Director of Finance

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Incumbents must be able to lift up to 25 pounds (50 with assistance), climb, stand, stoop and work outside in all weather conditions. Job requires travel and work on weekends, nights, holidays and on-call basis.

COMPETENCIES & EXPERIENCE

  1. Understands and agrees with US Ski & Snowboards values; Grit, Excellence, Team, Fun, Integrity
  2. A minimum of 10 years experience of participating in snow sports. First hand experience of working with successful World Cup level athletes and also within development pathways preferred
  3. Excellent at building relationships, being collaborative, listening, and communication skills, both verbal (including public speaking) and written
  4. Extensive multi stakeholder experience preferred with a passion for developing talent at all levels
  5. A good understanding of the full snowboard ecosystem in the US preferred
  6. Must be a strategic and long-term thinker, but also must be detail and task oriented.
  7. An attitude and mindset for thinking outside of the box and pushing the boundaries to achieve excellence
  8. Strong time management skills and works well under pressure
  9. Experience of working in the US and Europe preferred
  10. Foreign language skills are a plus
  11. Education level of a BA/BS preferred

  • Freeski Halfpipe Head Coach
  • Freeski Slopestyle Head Coach
  • Freeski Team Manager
  1. Dotted line responsibility for Snowboard/Freeski Development Director
  2. Ability to provide direction, guidance, leadership to the entire Freeski Department Pro and Rookie
