Financial Aid Assistant (HYBRID after training period)

The New England College of Optometry (NECO) prepares the next generation of eye care providers, educators, and innovators through a rigorous curriculum and extensive clinical experience. Located in the heart of Boston, NECO is a small, independent graduate institution that currently enrolls students from 34 states and 8 countries. NECO is seeking a Financial Aid Assistant!

The Financial Aid Assistant will assist the Director of Financial Aid in the daily operation of the Financial Aid Office by assisting prospective and current students with financial aid needs in this vital role. This non-exempt position is a full-time, 35 hour per week role and will offer hybrid capabilities after a successful training period. Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional customer service in NECO's financial aid department to prospective and current students, including timely response to emails and phone inquiries as the first point of contact.
  • Interpret and explain regulatory information related to the financial aid process to current and prospective students.
  • Review and track incoming documents on the financial aid system (PowerFAIDS) and work with students to complete the application process.
  • Prepare and update forms, documents, certificates, manuals, orientation packets and handbooks.
  • Coordinate Federal Work Study and other student employment, including creating and maintaining student job descriptions, handle job placements, monitor students' earnings, compile data for regulatory reporting, and stay abreast of hiring regulations for student employees.
  • Complete international student loan and enrollment verification forms.
  • Record completion of required federal and institutional loan exit counseling and other required documents for graduation clearance.
  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred. 2 years' experience in Financial Aid or similar field is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of Financial Aid rules and regulations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with an ability to work well with varied and diverse populations including students, faculty and professionals.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Demonstration of strong attention to detail, initiative taking and problem-solving skills.
  • A thorough working knowledge of computer systems and the ability and willingness to learn new systems/processes is required.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite products, Microsoft products including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as video conferencing sites such as Zoom is required.
  • Experience with Jenzabar, PowerFAIDS and the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) programs is highly desirable.
