The Strategic Investments Group (SIG) provides financial and location advisory services to firms seeking to relocate to or expand within New York City. SIG develops innovative financial products aimed at strengthening strategically significant industry subsectors and foster new job growth. Utilizing equity and debt investments in conjunction with discretionary tax benefits, SIG negotiates deal structures and provides financing opportunities to foster business growth in NYC. SIG frequently works with City Hall and other City agencies to advise on tax incentives and strategies for business attraction and relocation, as well as frequently participating in outreach events and conferences to promote programs.

Your Role: NYCEDC is seeking a capable, graduate student (undergraduates will be considered) to work as a paid intern for the Strategic Investments Group for the fall. Candidates must demonstrate an interest in economic development, urban policy, and public finance, and possess research, writing, and analytical skills. The candidate will collaborate on financial models as well as databases in Excel and will create presentations of findings in PowerPoint. Exact schedules will be determined in consultation with the Intern, but NYCEDC is looking for a minimum commitment of 8-10 weeks, on a part-time schedule.

Potential Projects:
  • Develop and maintain detailed financial models and data sets
  • Drafting, editing, and coordinating materials and reports for SIG programs (including loan funds, incentives for not-for-profit and for-profit companies, and New Markets Tax Credits)
  • Researching sector and market trends relevant to SIG priority areas
  • Prepare ad-hoc analysis to support the evaluation of strategic opportunities and transactions
  • Aiding in the preparation and presentation of marketing materials and assisting with the planning of outreach events
  • Helping to field program inquiries alongside SIG staff
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Enrolled in Master's Degree in finance, business, real estate, public policy, or urban planning preferred, exceptional candidates enrolled in an undergraduate program will be considered
  • Demonstrated interest in finance, public policy and/or economic development policy
  • Experience in the use of spreadsheets, databases, and presentation applications, including Excel and PowerPoint
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required
  • Ability to engage a diversity of stakeholder groups
  • Detail-oriented, flexible, collaborative, organized, with ability to creatively multi-task and manage deadlines
