Job Summary

The Weatherhead Center for International Affairs facilitates the production of pathbreaking social science research on international, comparative, transnational, and global issues. Our community of scholars consists of over 400 affiliates from multiple social science disciplines and includes both Harvard faculty and students drawing from nine of Harvard's schools as well as visitors to Harvard from all over the world. We house several dynamic research programs, initiatives, and clusters; host conferences, seminars, and workshops; and provide competitive fellowships to global scholars and research funding to Harvard faculty and students.

Position Description

Reporting to and working in partnership with the Faculty Director who provides the scientific and intellectual leadership for the program. The Executive Director of the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs is responsible for managing the overall strategic, programmatic, and financial activities of a large and complex research center with a $6.7 million budget, 25 staff members, and many residential and non-residential faculty, students, scholars, and other visitors. In close partnership with the Faculty Director, implements intellectual vision through delivery of new programs, strategies, and initiatives to advance the academic, research, and programmatic agenda of the Center. Coordinates relevant Center task forces and selection committees, and serves in an ex officio capacity on the Center's Executive Committee and Steering Committee. Works toward identifying and developing funding sources for Center program initiatives. Contributes to managing existing relationships with foundations and donors, and stewards the Center's funds appropriately and in keeping with donor terms. Translates medium- and long-term strategies into ongoing activities and resource-allocation decisions. Working with the steering committee evaluating proposals, oversees annual faculty grants program, including the Weatherhead Initiative and coordinates the Center's activities for up to ten annual conferences, three major University lectureships, and numerous seminars and workshops.

In collaboration with the Center's senior staff, manages the strategic, operational and financial planning of the Center and oversees key functions including: sponsored research, finance, human resources, communications, public relations, events management, graduate and undergraduate grants, and scholarly programs. Also hosts and interacts with fellows and other visiting scholars by meeting with them, attending events, etc.

The Executive Director manages Center staff to build and develop a diverse, effective and inclusive team; effectively plan and delegate work; provide staff development and mentorship; communicate and monitor performance expectations; motivate and nurture direct reports; and ensure compliance with Harvard and FAS policies and procedures. Is a member of the Center's senior management team and Administrative Action Group, coordinates work with other FAS and Harvard research centers and administrators, and collaborates with counterparts in other Harvard Schools and with University administration. Serves as the primary administrative point of contact for, and collaborates closely with, FAS administration.

Basic Qualifications
At least ten years' management experience in a decentralized, international academic environment, including significant experience working with faculty. Experience leading, managing, and building teams required. Bachelor's degree required.
