Position Summary:

The Executive Chair of Clinical Sciences ensures a high-quality clinical education through the leadership and achievement of clinical, educational, and research goals and objectives as demonstrated in medical student outcomes, faculty engagement, and clinical affiliate satisfaction.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Review clinical affiliation agreements, establish and maintain clinical sites and relationships
  • In coordination with the CMS Director of Faculty Affairs, process faculty appointments, renewals, promotions, and terminations within the Clinical Sciences Department
  • Write Chair letters for faculty appointments and promotions (average 2/day)
  • In collaboration with the Vice Chair of Clinical Sciences, complete clinical faculty-mid-year progress and annual performance reviews
  • Assist in the recruitment and hiring of clinical education directors and other key departmental faculty and staff
  • Support the selection, evaluation, promotion, and retention of highly qualified clinical education directors
  • Support the medical school strategic planning process
  • Apply continuous quality leadership principles to direct all processes associated with clinical education
  • Partner with the Chair and Vice Chair for Foundational Sciences & Humanities and Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Education; develop and manage policies that affects curricular implementation and integration across teaching sites
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Education establish and oversee best practices for medical student clinical education and faculty continuing medical education
  • Establish benchmarks and monitor performance outcomes of residency directors, clinical education directors, and site directors
  • Mentor junior faculty to encourage academic promotion independent of performance reviews
  • Ensure professional success of clinical education directors and faculty
  • Monitor student clinical achievement and satisfaction against national standards
  • Assist in the identification, recruitment, and preparation of appropriate clinicians to serve as faculty
  • Review and approve volunteer clinical faculty appointments
  • In conjunction with other team members, is involved with the orientation process of new clinical faculty
  • Develop and maintain cost effective, high quality standards for clinical faculty and educational experiences
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards as well as federal and state regulations of participation by medical students in clinical care
  • Uphold policies and protocols to achieve continual improvement in the quality and safety of patient care
  • Collaborate with admissions and student affairs to enhance integration of services and understanding of clinical experience
  • Foster scholarly activity and research in collaboration with the Vice Dean for Research
  • Manage the budgeting for all departmental needs in collaboration with the Dean's office
  • Attend CMS leadership meetings as requested (Dean's Cabinet, Faculty Executive Council, etc.)
  • Serve on CMS and RFU committees as requested (Directors of Clinical Education Committee, Curriculum Committee, etc.)
  • Participate in LCME activities and meetings as requested
  • Organize Clinical Sciences Grand Rounds
  • Oversee staff in the Department of Clinical Sciences
  • Serve as a Schema Case facilitator when needed
  • Serve as a role model for professionalism and leadership
  • Foster diversity and inclusion and support interprofessionalism
  • Promote a positive work/learning environment in the clinical settings
  • Contribute to building strong relationships with stakeholders and constituents
  • Engage in the identification and stewardship of new affiliate sites
  • Other duties as requested by the CMS Dean.



Required Education and Experience:
  • Doctor of Medicine MD, or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine DO, with Board Certification in their specialty
  • Experience managing professionals in a complex organization
  • Experience with LCME and/or other accrediting bodies
  • Proven experience in management of multiple initiatives and multiple sites

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Must have a passion for medical education
  • Knowledge of and skills related to effective leadership of clinicians
  • Demonstrated creative problem solver with the ability to innovate and build consensus around proposed solutions
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with proficiency in the use of social networking technology
  • Proven ability to work as a partner with a variety of constituents
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Outgoing personality with proven ability to advocate for change

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Served in a leadership role for at least 2 years
