POSITION: Legal Specialist

REPORTS TO: Michelle N. Mendez, Defending Vulnerable Populations Program Director

SECTION: Defending Vulnerable Populations

STATUS: Exempt

Summary Description:

The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) seeks a legal specialist to join the Defending Vulnerable Populations (DVP) Program. The legal specialist will coordinate the legal work of the Formerly Separated Families Project and the Motions to Reopen Project. The legal assistant will also assist the federal litigation team on an as needed basis.

Primary Responsibilities

Motions to Reopen Project (50%)

  • Manage referral entries from non-affiliates, affiliates and networks
  • Conduct intakes with potential new clients
  • Run conflict checks on new client intakes
  • File Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests
  • Communicate with clients
  • Manage client files and data entry in Lawlab database
  • Draft client declarations in support of the motion to reopen
  • Assist with expert declaration drafting
  • Write first draft of notable cases to present to CLINICs External Relations Program
  • Redact and manage the motions to reopen brief bank

Formerly Separated Families Project (50%)

  • Manage case data entry within NRFAP Lawlab database, including hearing information from the EOIR hotline
  • Contact families separated by the Trump administration now living in the United States
  • Contact non-profit legal service providers and private attorneys to assess removal defense and SIJS representation capacity
  • Draft concise and compelling case summaries for pro or low bono case placement
  • Assist families with joining our Facebook group for separated families
  • Post pre-approved information on our family-facing Facebook group
  • Provide support on FOIA requests, humanitarian parole applications, Federal Torts Claims Act administrative filings, employment authorization applications, and pro se motions to change venue
  • Run conflict checks

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • College graduate
  • Speak and write Spanish fluently
  • Cultural competence and cross-cultural communication skills
  • 5+ years immigration law practice experience with specialty in removal defense
  • Commitment to excellence and high standards
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work self-sufficiently and to direct projects
  • Desire to work collaboratively with the Defending Vulnerable Populations team and with outside partners

Other
