ABOUT THE ROLE

Recruit, hire, train, develop, manage, and drive sales with a team of eight sales representatives (based remotely throughout the Western and Midwestern United States) and prepare them for advancement or other positions in the organization.

Primary Responsibilities:

MANAGERIAL

-- Recruit, interview, and hire sales representatives using a model of continuous recruiting looking especially for diversity

-- Assist in formal sales training

-- On-the-job training of new sales representatives

-- Provide on-going training of reps through individual counseling and periodic meetings

-- Actively manage the activities of all reporting reps, ensuring the company's sales, market development, and editorial goals are met and exceeded

-- Monitor gratis and targeting for accuracy and completeness

-- Provide reporting sales reps with assistance in closing key adoptions

-- Assist inside and field reps in developing product and market knowledge

-- Assist in assigning sales, market development, and editorial goals for each rep in the district

-- Budget, monitor, and approve expenses for the district

-- Assist in sales forecasting and both horizontal and vertical sales tracking

-- Coordinate and/or prepare presentations for National Sales Meetings and corporate training sessions as requested

-- Prepare performance evaluations for district

-- Provide marketing and editorial departments with feedback on trends and acceptance of OUP titles in the marketplace

The following essential functions are related to the Managerial responsibilities listed above.
  1. Recruit, interview, and hire sales representatives using a model of continuous recruiting.
  2. Provide on-going training and motivation of reps through individual counseling and periodic meetings while traveling to work on campus with them at least 4 days a semester and 8 days a year minimum.
  3. Speak with (and correspond via email) your direct reporting sales reps at least weekly to gather information on their sales progress and address any training needs.
  4. Evaluate each sales reps performance and determine training needs.
  5. Work directly on campus carrying out the same job functions as listed below under Sales Territory.

TRAVEL:

In a managerial capacity, DSM requires significant overnight travel (40% or more) to work in the field with their staff members.

STRATEGIC GOALS

-- Conduct Territorial and District analyses using SAP data and targeting data from SFDC sampling system

-- Develop district strategies in core markets

-- Make connections to and participate in the larger national strategy set by the NSM and Division head.

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION CRITERIA

-- Aggregate sales performance of the district

-- Training and development of staff, creating a ready pool of qualified people promotable to other positions within the organization

ABOUT YOU

-- A minimum of two years experience in sales management, or two or more years of successful inside and/or field sales experience in college publishing.

--Necessary skills include the ability to:
  1. analyze complex situations and make decisions
  2. organize large amounts of data in multiple sales territories, and
  3. prioritize prospects and titles for approximately 400 accounts.

-- Position requires substantial flexibility in managerial and interpersonal styles to successfully function within a team leadership model.

-- Prior teaching or managerial experience is desirable, but not essential.

-- Be located in the Western or Central US
