We seek an enthusiastic, team oriented, and adaptable manager to lead the Process Analytical Chemistry group. This group is responsible for supporting recovery and purification process development by providing fit-for-purpose analytical methods to support process selection, optimization, and troubleshooting. The ideal candidate will have expertise and experience managing high performing teams that provide analytical support to process development functions; a broad technical background in analytical methods, including a variety of instrumentation and complex sample types; and a strong command of statistics for analytical method evaluation.

Responsibilities
    • Manage team of analytical chemists to ensure fit for purpose analytical assays are deployed to support product recovery and purification.
    • Assign team members and allocate instrument resources to execute agreed upon deliverables for projects, balancing multiple program priorities and reprioritizing as necessary.
    • Identify and utilize external laboratories for analytical services as appropriate to optimize business costs and time.
    • Identify areas where additional capital infrastructure is required and build business case for input to department budget.
    • Hire and train additional personnel where necessary to meet business objectives.
    • Manage analytical laboratory space and instruments used by team members and other stakeholders. Oversee implementation of additional instruments and processes to improve the efficiency of operations.
    • Proactively identify and communicate resourcing shortfalls to department and project leads. Evaluate tradeoffs and propose possible solutions.
    • Formulate strategic roadmap for Process Analytical Chemistry function. Proactively identify new ways of working and new technologies to increase efficiency, throughput, data quality, and to generate new relevant data types.
    • Mentor and train employees to enable engagement, retention, and high performance.
    • Represent the team capabilities and impact within R&D, to stakeholders in Quality, Process Development/Manufacturing, and Commercial organizations at Amyris, and, where required, to Amyris business partners. Build and maintain relationships with these stakeholders to ensure business goals are met.
    • Review and approve Standard Operating Procedures, Method Development Reports, and other written documentation of analytical studies.
    • Maintain safe work environment.


Qualifications
    • Ph.D. degree or 15+ years' experience in analytical chemistry or related discipline.
    • Previous experience in providing analytical support to process development teams in an industrial setting.
    • Team management abilities including delegation; performance evaluation, feedback, coaching, rewarding; conflict resolution.
    • Ability to translate business and project milestones into analytical resourcing requirements (people, instruments and assays).
    • Ability to establish and maintain key stakeholder relationships.
    • Technical background in quantitative assay development and evaluation. Familiarity with a broad range of analytical platforms (e.g. chromatography, mass spectrometry, titration, spectroscopy). Familiarity with treatment of complex, inhomogeneous sample types.
    • Ability to recommend and evaluate statistical approaches used to draw conclusions from large data sets in the context of analytical method validation and comparability. Ability to use Minitab, JMP or similar statistical tools.
    • Adaptable, highly self-motivated and able to work creatively, efficiently and productively to support rapid research efforts in the fine chemical industries.
