Today's USO continuously adapts to the needs of our men and women in uniform and their families, so they can focus on their very important mission. We operate USO centers at or near military installations across the United States and throughout the world, including in combat zones, and even un-staffed USO service sites in places too dangerous for anyone but combat troops to occupy.

The Director, Organizational Development, Communications & Special Projects is responsible for managing and supporting the assessment of organizational needs and the design, implementation and evaluation of programs that facilitate the professional development and continuous learning of team members, particularly current and emerging leaders. This position is also responsible for managing the strategic planning process, initiatives, and communications for the Department, and for developing, overseeing, tracking and reporting on strategic projects. Reports directly to the SVP of Global Human Resources.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential Duties)

  • Manage organizational development (OD) strategies and processes. Assess OD needs of all organizational departments and regions. Lead the design, development and implementation of programs, policies and strategies tailored to meet OD needs and program goals. Evaluates strategies and programs to measure the achievement of established goals.*
  • Assist with the provision of expert facilitation and coaching to supervisors and managers regarding OD methods and tools. Manage the individual development planning process for executives and emerging leaders. Provide consultative services regarding mentoring.*
  • Plan, develop, implement and administer development and training programs for USO employees. Directs the needs assessment for training and staff development.*
  • Manage the strategic planning process for the department within the organizational framework that is established. Work closely with HR team members to implement strategic projects/programs and track progress toward goals.*
  • Oversee the internal communication strategy for the SVP, HR and manage elements as needed. Draft and edit written materials such as company-wide emails, articles, policies, presentations, program descriptions, and training content.*
  • Coordinate with Human Resources team members, regional leaders, and other department leads in support of HR priorities, strategic initiatives, and OD objectives. Collaborate with the Director, Strategic Planning & Special Assistant to the CEO for execution of tasks and initiatives.
  • Plan and lead short- and long-term planning for OD programs. Prepare budgetary recommendations that meet departmental goals and provide for effective management of resources.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in organizational development, human resources, business administration or related field. MBA preferred.
  • 7+ years progressively responsible work experience in organizational development. Relevant experience in a non-profit, military, multicultural and/or global organization preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including proficiency as a presenter and facilitator. Adept with a variety of multimedia training platforms and methods.
  • Ability to design and implement effective training and development programs, and ability to evaluate and research training options and alternatives.
  • Working knowledge of strategic planning concepts and metrics reporting. Experience in developing, analyzing, and reporting measurements to monitor the outcomes of training and development programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and execute multiple, complex projects requiring cross-functional collaboration.
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Ability to interact with USO Senior Leadership and employees at all levels throughout the organization with confidence, integrity and professionalism. Ability to manage and influence external vendor relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment related to controversial and/or culturally sensitive subjects. Ability to handle confidential information with tact and poise.
  • Working knowledge of business functions, including operations, marketing, and budgeting.
  • Demonstrated initiative/self-motivation, with the ability to quickly and easily adapt to changing organizational needs.
  • Ability to manage a high volume of assignments with varying complexity and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment with integrity and professionalism.
  • Proficiency using computers and electronics equipment. Working knowledge of various software, applications, and programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite. Demonstrated expertise in Excel and PowerPoint highly desired.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain proper credentials necessary to access USO Center locations and facilities including but not limited to security, credit and/or background screening, SOFA status, valid driver's license.
  • Must be a strong advocate of the USO's mission.
