Amherst College invites applications for the Director of Facilities Operations position. The Director of Facilities Operations is a full time, year round position, job group and level AD-1. The Director directs the operational functions of the Facilities Department which includes the Building Trades, Electrical, Mechanical/Plumbing shops and the Energy Plant, the Service Center and the Energy Manager. The Director reports directly to the Chief of Campus Operations and provides leadership and direction related to the operation, maintenance, repair and enhancement of the college's facilities and infrastructure.

Takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the college's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Management
  • Leads and manages 5 supervisors toward meeting the goals of the department
  • Oversees the Energy Manager to ensure energy conservation projects are identified and implemented. Ensures collaboration between the Energy Manager and the Shops
  • Manages the maintenance and operation of the campus infrastructure including electrical, water, steam, chilled water, drainage and sewer system while working closely with the IT Department on the telephone/data infrastructure
  • Coordinates departmental work management including maintenance schedules, procedures and practices, programs and customer service standards
  • Responsible for making technical decisions and for representing the departments' and college's interests on policy matters
  • Participates actively in the college's energy procurement strategies and delivery, and broadly represents the college on sustainability efforts as it relates to the Operations Department
  • Serves as primary point of contact for environmental, health and safety issues as related to Operations personnel and activities

Administrative
  • Acts on behalf of the college in negotiating maintenance contracts, and procures and manages the activities of engineers, architects and other professional consultants necessary to the operation of the college
  • Guides the development and implementation of the infrastructure aspects of the college's emergency preparedness plans
  • Develops recurring Capital Renewal Budget requests that fall under the Operations Department.
  • Provides oversight and management of recurring capital renewal budgets for the Operations Department
  • Provides input to various Facilities Conditions Assessment reports

Department Partnerships
  • Collaborates with the Design & Construction Department in the planning, design, delivery and occupancy of new construction and major renovations, and makes recommendations to the Director of Design and Construction. Ensures trade shop input and participation in major capital projects
  • Provides design and engineering input to the Design & Construction Department
  • Works with the Facilities Capital Stewardship Manager to identify life cycle maintenance needs

QUALIFICATIONS

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or architecture, or related field
  • A valid driver's license and successful credentialing is required in order to operate college vehicles
  • An acceptable criminal offender records information (CORI) check
  • 10 years of relevant experience in a Facilities organization or closely related business with at least 5 years of leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Familiarity and experience with the Massachusetts Building, Electrical, Plumbing and Fire Codes, common construction practices, management and construction contract management.
  • Ability to read, understand, interpret, formulate plans, specifications and cost estimates.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Experience with or commitment to working with a diverse community

Preferred
  • AMaster's degree in engineering or architecture
