Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Director of Athletics Communications position. The Director of Athletics Communications is a full-time, year-round position, job group and level PT-4. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Director of Athletics Communications is responsible for strategically promoting and celebrating the excellence of Amherst's storied athletics program and the accomplishments of the College's diverse and talented student-athletes. Supervising a full-time Assistant Director of Athletics Communications and one or two part-time interns, as well as multiple student workers, the Director manages the compilation and distribution of information and news about Amherst Athletics, and serves as a liaison between the media and the general public for the College's student-athletes and Athletics personnel. The Director reports to the Director of Media Communications of the College's Office of Communications team, and represents and advocates for Athletics in discussions of overall institutional communications strategy. In addition, the Director cultivates and maintains strong collaborative relationships across campus, particularly with the members of the Athletics coaches and staff. Some travel is required, as is a valid driver's license.

The Director of Athletics Communication's schedule varies throughout the year, as it corresponds with each athletic season and will require flexibility to work nights, weekends, and some holidays as the seasons require.

Summary of Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Content creation and distribution
  • Writes, designs, prints and/or posts previews, home game programs, post-game recaps, graphics, video and photography for the Athletics website and social media channels, which include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube pages, as well as the NCAA Tournament Tumblr blog
  • Pitches and writes occasional press releases and articles for Amherst magazine and the College's website
  • Strategically manages the editorial mix of stories and other content to ensure broad representation of our diverse student-athletes
  • Contributes photos to the sports galleries on the College's Flickr account and helps schedule photo/video assignments for Communications photographers, videographers and/or outside vendors/freelancers
  • Maintains photographs, statistics, rosters, schedules, results, historical records, archives, and bios for each member of Amherst's 27 varsity teams
  • Helps run webcasts and tracks live statistics
  • Manages the relationship with website vendor Sidearm Sports
  • Works closely with the NESCAC and NCAA to submit required statistics
  • Serves as or assigns the official statistician and press box/table manager for applicable home athletics events
  • Collaborates with Athletics staffers in the training, supervision and scheduling of a diverse group of student workers who help distribute programs, coordinate music and/or help with the public address, scoreboard operation and tracking of official NCAA statistics at home games
  • Serves on the Games Committee during NESCAC and NCAA championship events
  • Manages post-game interviews with coaches and student-athletes when requested
  • Helps organize team banquets and special awards presentations
Media and external relations
  • Serves as the Athletics liaison with the local and national media
  • Responds to general media queries and requests, coordinates coach/student-athlete interviews, and pitches or collaborates with the Director of Media Communications to pitch story ideas to local and national media
  • Emails game recaps, box scores, press releases and feature stories to local media immediately following their publication to the athletics website
  • Contacts student-athletes' local newspapers when outstanding athletic/academic achievements occur
  • Nominates student-athletes for conference, regional and national awards

The Director of Athletics Communications' schedule varies throughout the year, as it corresponds with each season:
  • Fall (Sept. 1 through end of Nov.): 7 days, includes nights and weekends
  • Winter (Dec. 1 through mid-March): 5-7 days, nights and weekends
  • Spring (Mid-March through end of May): 6-7 days, nights and weekends
  • Interterm (Mid-Dec. through late Jan.) and Summer (June 1 through end of Aug.): During the interterm and summer, the sports information staff is required, among other tasks, to archive the previous year's seasons and prepare each team's web pages for the upcoming year. Mapping out and selling ads (parent and vendor) for Football Illustrated is a major summer project, along with any redesigns of the athletics website.
  • Championship Seasons (when individual teams advance to post-season play)

(Fall: Early Nov.-Thanksgiving Break, Winter: Late Feb.-Mid-March, Spring: Mid-April-Mid-May): 7 days, nights and weekends, regular travel with teams competing over winter and spring breaks and in post-season New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and NCAA tournaments

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3 years of experience in the athletics communications field
  • Excellent writing and editing, basic photography, and video editing skills
  • Firm knowledge of NCAA rules for all varsity sports
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, StatCrew, PrestoStats, Genius Sports NCAA Live Stats, Golfstat, and SIDEARM Sports
  • Excellent collaboration and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work under the pressure of very tight deadlines
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including frequent evenings and weekends to support events
  • Ability to quickly assess unforeseen situations, use sound and thoughtful judgment to make decisions, and problem-solve
  • Demonstrated experience with social media, media relations, basic photography, and video editing
  • Superior attention to detail, proofreading, and editing skills
  • Leadership and supervisory experience, including demonstrated staff management skills
  • Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community
