POSITION OVERVIEWAntioch University is looking for a Director of Accounting to serve as an integral member of accounting leadership. The Director of Accounting will be a strong leader and team player with unquestionable integrity, a "can-do" attitude, a fondness for learning, and a track record for creative problem-solving and leading operational change. The Director of Accounting shall be technically proficient in accounting and possess a strong knowledge of GAAP and finance principles.
The Director of Accounting will be responsible for overseeing the General Accounting and Financial Reporting functions and Accounts Payable operations. The Director of Accounting will be responsible for implementing and maintaining a system of internal controls that will ensure that the University's assets are adequately safeguarded.
This position will be responsible for working with the accounting team on:
- Financial reporting, including the preparation of interim and annual financial statements and other financial reports and/or analyses as required or requested by the Board of Governors, management, external lenders, regulatory agencies, and other 3rd parties;
- Annual audits, including financial and A-133;
- Tax reporting; compliance with all federal, state, and local laws/regulations and University policies; monitor tax-exempt bond compliance;
- Supporting the CFO with the University's lending/financing relationships and banking activities, including bond issue development and management;
- Leveraging enabling technologies to increase productivity without compromising quality/internal controls; improving business processes and updating policies and procedures where applicable;
- Financial operations, including accounts receivable/payable, cash management/treasury, cash forecasting, investments and fixed assets
RESPONSIBILITIESFinancial and Tax Reporting
- Prepare financial reports and/or analyses as required or requested by the Board of Governors, management, external lenders, regulatory agencies, and other 3rd parties
- Compile accurate and timely interim and annual financial statements, including accompanying footnote disclosures at year end
- Develop financial reporting solutions to help inform and support effective decision-making by management and members of the University community.
- Serve as the liaison for audits of the University to ensure clean and timely year-end audits. Respond to auditor inquiries and suggestions and implement corrective action where necessary. Be proactive and anticipate potential noncompliance issues and errors and address accordingly.
- Submit annual financial IPEDS reports and the HLC annual institutional data report
- Reconcile and manage with Institutional Advancement contributions, endowment, and investment accounts.
- Tax reporting; ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws/regulations and University policies
- If applicable, monitor tax-exempt bond compliance
Financial Operations
- Oversee the accounts payable operations and accounting for investments and fixed assets;
- Assist the Strategic Business Solutions Partner with accounts receivable, cash management/treasury and cash forecasting.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of the general ledger structure; prepare monthly, quarterly and annual closing general ledger entries; advise staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions; ensure accurate and timely interim and year end closes;
- Review staff account reconciliations to ensure that they are prepared properly; follow-up on any unusual items;
- Perform variance analysis on interim and annual results of operations;
- Leverage enabling technologies to increase productivity without compromising quality/internal controls; improve business processes and update policies and procedures where applicable
- Support the CFO with the University's lending/financing relationships and banking activities, including bond issue development and management
- Support budget and forecasting activities
Supervision
- Hire, train, develop and direct accounting and administrative staff
- Motivate staff to achieve goals through individual and team supervision, coaching, goal setting, training and staff development, among other strategies
- Review and evaluate staff performance
Miscellaneous
- Attend leadership team and staff meetings
- Attend meetings of the Board of Governors and Board of Trustees, as requested
- Performs other duties as assigned
EDUCATION/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education with a major in accounting; CPA strongly preferred; MBA a plus
- Experience with integrated financial systems; Colleague a plus
- Minimum of five years of relevant accounting or auditing experience, preferably at a college or university
- Supervisory experience required
This position requires the knowledge, skills and ability to:
- Proven knowledge of GAAP, finance principles, and tax policies and procedures (higher education a plus)
- Excellent math, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Conversant in technology with the ability to quickly and accurately enter and retrieve data into computer databases
- Proficient in Microsoft Office - Excel, PowerPoint; database applications/tools
- Ability to interact with individuals at all levels throughout the University community; strong interpersonal and communication skills; collaborative management style
- Ability to run meetings effectively
- Adaptability to unexpected challenges and changes in an environment
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects in periods of rapid organizational change
- Ability to read financial reports, identify anomalies and investigate to determine causes
- Ability to use ERP systems and report writing tools to design and generate campus reports
- Ability to monitor performance, supervise and discipline when warranted
