Job Summary: The IDEA Center for Public Gardens is a new initiative of Denver Botanic Gardens in partnership with the American Public Gardens Association. The Center will provide support for gardens to develop inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility policies and programs, to identify and spread best IDEA practices and to position public gardens as institutions that welcome, engage and inspire all people.

Denver Botanic Gardens, with support from a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services has secured resources for the first three years of operation.

The Director position will have the unique opportunity to lead and build this initiative. The Director will also work collaboratively with Denver Botanic Gardens staff and trustees to advance internal IDEA policies and programs.

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer

Compensation: $4,618.38 - $5,000 Per Pay Period


  • Minimum eight-years of work related and civic leadership experience. Recent experience with public gardens in a leadership capacity and with the American Public Gardens Association programs and staff.
  • Proven measurable outcomes working with inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility programs including the ability to show measurements and impacts.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a facilitator and public speaker. Preferably experience with large groups and at conferences.
  • Successful record of preparing and managing a budget.
  • Demonstrated negotiation, persuasion, and fundraising skills.
  • Ability to create and execute innovative programs from scratch.
  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university preferred.
  • Must have working knowledge of personal computers, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and standard office equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Understand initial program elements and develop timelines, communications, and benchmarks.
  • Work closely with the American Public Gardens Association to identify potential participating gardens in early cohorts of training and facilitated discussion.
  • Initiate an evaluation process for desired outcomes.
  • Develop an application and screening process for first round and subsequent participants.
  • Identify and be ready to deploy IDEA facilitators and speakers.
  • Ensure accountability for use of the ILMS grant.
  • Investigate new funding opportunities for the expansion of the Center.
  • Develop a five-year plan for expansion of the Center's reach and impact.
