Director, e-Learning

Under direction from the Managing Director,Education, takes responsibility for the design, development, implementation and maintenance of state of the art e-Learning offerings for assigned components of the SOAs pre and post qualification education programs. Aligns all programs and initiatives with the strategic direction of the organization as well as the curriculum decisions made by volunteer leadership. Ensures that programming is innovative and that the user experience is of the highest priority. Liaises with and cultivate relationships with volunteers, consultants and cross-functional teams including Education, Professional Development, Engagement, Product Development and Innovation, Marketing and Communication, Information Technology Services (ITS) and Customer Service department staff to produce high-quality learning, performance support and professional growth solutions.


  • Directs all aspects of the SOAs e-Learning systems. Conceptualizes, frames and manages multi-faceted complex e-Learning initiatives and projects as assigned.
  • Aligns overall e-Learning strategy to the priorities of the organization as a whole, and advises on organizational and divisional priorities from an e-Learning perspective as needed.
  • Oversees the work of the Instructional Design team and provides high level instructional design expertise in the conception, design, development and deployment of e-Learning solutions and programs. Ensures that appropriate instructional technologies (e.g., scenario-based exercises, social learning,) are employed to drive knowledge retention and increase the effectiveness of the e-Learning program.
  • Oversees the administration of the Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Learning Content Management System (LCMS) and makes recommendations for infrastructure upgrades as needed to maintain pace with available technologies. Oversees quality assurance checks, deployment and proper system functionality. Works collaboratively with e-Learning Manager and ITS to investigate and resolve issues as they arise.
  • Oversees the reporting capabilities that inform outcome-based success measures and guide future program design, with an emphasis on leveraging modern data collection channels (e.g., xAPI).
  • Ensures that proper documentation is maintained for both instructional design and LMS/LCMS system maintenance.
  • Reviews current vendor status, achievements and pricing to make recommendations for future relationships.
  • Provides input to the selection and hiring of technical subject matter experts or other external expertise as needed for certain projects, in partnership with the Director, Education Program Development.
  • Prepares and monitors budgets for all aspects of the SOAs e-Learning environment, in partnership with ITS when considering capital improvements and other infrastructure considerations that are addressed in the ITS budget.
  • Establishes and monitors deliverables and metrics for e-Learning projects as part of the annual goal-setting process.
  • Establishes effective dialogue/partnership with staff, volunteers, employers and other major stakeholders to ensure programs and initiatives make appropriate use of resources and meet the needs of stakeholders.
  • Facilitates the development and repurposing of current and relevant technical and business content for delivery using various approaches, formats and technologies, e.g., blended programs, subscription-based products.
  • Stays current with all developments in the field of online learning, learning technology and instructional design including best practices, emerging trends and solutions.
  • Provides overall direction for all staff responsible for instructional design, LMS administration and all e-Learning functions. Ensures that appropriate professional development and career enhancement opportunities are available through effective training, mentoring and performance evaluations.


  • Participates in Education committee meetings as appropriate.
  • Responds to candidate, volunteer, member and employer inquiries related to e-Learning programming or delegates such responses to the appropriate staff member.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED (an equivalent amount of training, education and experience will be considered)

  • Masters degree in related area is required.
  • Experience with adult learning and instructional design is essential.
  • Experience in developing online educational products is essential.
  • Experience in managing a LMS and LCMS and related technologies is essential.
  • Experience using a wide range of e-Learning technologies including a comprehensive learning management system.
  • A minimum of five years relevant professional experience with a demonstrated increase in the scope of responsibility and management; work experience with a professional nonprofit association or in an academic setting is desirable.


  • Proven ability in complex project management skills.
  • Ability to set direction and manage change.
  • Demonstrated skills in diplomacy and negotiation.
  • Ability to represent SOA in professional manner to both internal and external publics.
  • Sensitivity to political/cultural differences and ability to embrace diversity in problem solving and in the development of shared outcomes.

  • Proficient with MS Office suite of products.
  • Proficient with online authoring tools (Captivate, Claro, etc.).
  • Proficient and knowledgeable with learning management system tools.
  • Proficiency with AMS Personify would be beneficial but not essential.
  • Occasional overnight travel

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES AND COORDINATION required to perform the functions of this job.

  • Supervises the following staff positions: Instructional Designer (2); Manager e-Learning.
  • Coordinates with several volunteer groups including but not limited to the Professional Development Committee; Education Executive, members and candidates.
