The Director, AI and Emerging Technologies develops, leads, and executes on a portfolio of projects at the intersection of AI/Emerging Tech and society. Included in your remit are our efforts related to algorithmic bias, data policy, with the lens of justice, ethics, equity, diversity, and inclusion in technology. In this role, you may also be asked to collaborate on themes ranging from cybersecurity, content moderation, mis- and disinformation, local media, press freedom and so on. The right candidate will be deeply thoughtful about these issues and be familiar with key technologies, their trajectory, and their implications on society. Specifically, you will:

  • Serve as the primary thought-leader for projects and programs you design or be asked to lead which may include: research, landscape analyses, agenda development, and drafting summaries, moderation, reports, grant applications, blog posts, op-eds or similar.

  • Take on the primary role in the execution, management and coordination of initiative elements including, roundtables, conferences, fellowships, grantmaking, or other.

  • Solicit input from a broad range of stakeholders including institutional leaders, partner organizations, internal colleagues, and funders.

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop high-quality programming, research, and tools that are responsive to the greatest needs in the field.


Essential duties and responsibilities are as follows. Other responsibilities may be added as necessary.

In consultation with the Executive Directors, team members and constituents:

  • Provide thought leadership in your project area

  • Draft, develop and refine programming and other outputs

  • Identify and engage with diverse and balanced participants to inform roundtables and written materials

  • Thoughtfully design and research advance material, including background reading compilations

  • Moderate meetings


  • Research necessary information on programs and stakeholders

  • Maintain communication with relevant stakeholders

  • Draft and/or edit of material for production and distribution

  • Manage and supervise meeting logistics

Shared Responsibilities:

  • Assist with other Aspen Digital initiatives as needed

  • Identify opportunities to improve the quality and efficiency of the Program and the Aspen Institute

  • Participate in the design and strategic planning for Aspen Digital

  • Support the development of funding applications, solicitation, and reporting to foundations and major donors who support our work

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated understanding of the AI and emerging technologies domain, including key stakeholders

  • Proven track record of project management and superior administrative capacity to deliver

  • Excellent research skills

  • Demonstrated superb writing skills

  • Flexible schedulesome travel may be required

  • Ability to work with minimal direction and as part of a team in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

  • Familiarity with one or more of the following: fundraising, stakeholder management, coalition building, or public policy-making.

The Institute has implemented a mandatory COVID vaccination policy for all employees who will work at one of our physical locations, attend any of our in-person events or travel on behalf of the Institute. Staff unable to be vaccinated may request an exemption under certain circumstances.
