Avondale House is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit agency that provides educational services to children with autism, a day habilitation program for young adults, where clients receive training in daily living skills and pre-vocational activities and four residential homes for individuals unable to live in their own home. Avondale House has been serving individuals with autism since 1976.

Reporting to the CEO, the Development Director is responsible for establishing a high-quality development office and systems. The Development Director is accountable for all fundraising activities including maintaining and increasing funding received from individuals, events, foundations, corporations and other sources through effective identification, cultivation and solicitation of donors and prospects. The Development Director will work closely with the CEO and the Board of Directors, assuring that major gift solicitations become a focal point of this effort. In addition, the Development Director will oversee communications and volunteer outreach efforts as well as taking a lead role in creating an integrated organization with a significant fundraising strategy to support the efforts to assure financial growth for Avondale House.

Job Duties:

Fundraising:

  • Develops and implements a fund development plan in accordance with the agency business plan.
  • Oversees and implements the current 3-year strategic plan, to include capital expansion and capital campaign.
  • Stewards a segmented portfolio of between 150-200 donors, with a fiscal year calendar of donor-centered touchpoints.
  • Provides leadership for development team, including Marketing & Events Manager, Donor Relations Manager and Grants Funding Specialist.
  • Provides leadership in community relations and is on the frontline of messaging the work of Avondale House (corporations, foundations, individuals, community partners).
  • Serves as a member of the Executive Team, providing regular fundraising metrics and assisting the CEO with stewardship of major donors.
  • Provides excellent donor appreciation and stewardship at all levels.
  • Collaborates on and oversees departmental budget.
  • Retains and provides growth strategies for Avondale House giving circles: Sustainer's Circle, President's Circle, Corporate Heroes.
  • Manages the Philanthropy Committee.
  • Assists in building a culture of philanthropy.

Marketing & Events:

  • Supervises and supports the Marketing and Events Manager.
  • Approves the marketing and media strategy.
  • Provides oversight to agency website.
  • Assures approved branding is consistent across the organization.
  • Provides oversight to social media marketing efforts.
  • Approves all event strategies and timelines.

Volunteer Management:

  • Collaborates with Donor Relations Manager to retain key volunteers and grow the volunteer program at Avondale House.
  • Assures compliance with Avondale House Volunteer Procedure Manual across the organization.



  • Ability to work in a way that demonstrates Avondale House's Core Values: Commitment, Achievement, Respect, Integrity, Nurturing, and Growth.
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations or related field required, Master's Degree preferred.
  • Five years' experience in development and fundraising, including donor cultivation, annual giving programs, corporate and foundation solicitations, capital campaigns, and planned giving programs.
  • Previous record of successful public relations experience including interfacing with media, image development, campaigns, and written pieces.
  • High level of self-motivation. Ability to have a significant impact in a dynamic fundraising program.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication. Enjoys working and communicating with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate multiple tasks and competing priorities.
  • Team oriented with experience managing staff and volunteers.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office applications, including Word, Access, Excel, and Power Point as well as CRM
  • database software.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Fully Vaccinated for COVID-19. Documentation required.
