The Database Reporting & SQL Specialist for the Montana State University Alumni Foundation (Alumni Foundation) is primarily responsible for fulfillment of targeted data and report requests from both external Montana State University (University) partners, and internal Alumni Foundation team members. The Database Reporting & SQL Specialist reports to the Vice President, Data & Information Services.

Anticipated distribution of time and effort are outlined below:

  • 30% Manage and fulfill data and information requests from University partners and internal Alumni Foundation team members.
  • 30% Develop ad hoc and self-serve reports in Power BI Report Server, aka SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
  • 30% Design/Maintain/Perform regular data extract, transform, and load operations (ETL) using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
  • 10% Other duties including but not limited to: Organizational Software Helpdesk function. Business process development & SOPs Documentation. Assist in data hygiene and maintenance.


  1. Serve as primary liaison for data and information requests (i.e., list requests) to external University partners and manage all request-related communications.
  2. Manage the queue of data and report requests by collaborating with other members of the Data & Information Services team.
  3. Implement existing procedures and develop new SQL-based queries and procedures to fulfill targeted data requests, reporting needs, and data ETLs.
  4. Develop, document, and disseminate targeted best practices and standard operating procedures (SOP's) related to the fulfillment of targeted data and information requests from the Alumni Foundation database.
  5. Identify database-related improvement opportunities and collaborate with members of the Data & Information Services team to develop and implement solutions.
  6. Provide an organization-wide software helpdesk function, acting as the primary resource and first line of support. Serve as a liaison between the software vendor and MSUAF end users.
  7. Affect and maintain a professional, proactive, positive, highly collaborative, and performance-centric work environment.
  8. Other duties, as assigned by the Vice President, Data & Information Services.

  1. In-depth experience with SQL Server database query development.
  2. Understanding of and experience with the Microsoft SQL Server & BI stack, including SQL Server Management Studio, VS Data Tools, SSRS, and SSIS.
  3. General programming and database administration experience helpful.
  4. Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment while remaining helpful, pleasant, and courteous.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of computer hardware, including installation, operation, security, maintenance, and networking requirements.
  6. Complete respect for confidentiality.
  7. Excellent interpersonal and business communication skills.
  8. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  9. Ability to meet deadlines for multiple projects and priorities.
